The start of Stage 2 was not ideal for Cole Custer. After passing Ty Gibbs on pit road, Custer was issued a penalty from NASCAR. Custer went to the left to pass Gibbs, but NASCAR says that isn’t allowed.
At least, it isn’t allowed the way he did it. You are only allowed to pass on the left on pit road if and when a car has committed to their pit box. If they have not committed yet, you can’t pass.
Cole Custer got caught making the pass when he shouldn’t. So, he went to the rear of the field. Custer is the defending winner of the Xfinity Series Chicago Street Race. Here’s some radio comms via Richard Allen of MotorsportsReport.
Even after he was given the explanation about the penalty, Cole Custer was mad.
Cole Custer is trying to make the most of his day. The level of competition is stiffer this year in Chicago. Cup Series drivers are allowed to race in the Xfinity Series event this year. So, it makes sense that he isn’t doing as well.
Still, he isn’t going to roll over. Custer is an underrated road course racer in the Xfinity Series. He is more than capable of contending and winning on these road and street courses. Having Kyle Larson, Shane van Gisbergen, and Ty Gibbs in the race doesn’t help, though.
Larson and SVG have put on a show for the Windy City and NASCAR fans. Crossovers and bold moves into the corners. They are getting all they can out of their machines right now. Let’s see if we get the finish everyone is expecting right now.

Cole Custer having more issues
As if things couldn’t get worse for Cole Custer. He served that penalty and then made his way back up. However, on the Stage 2 break, Custer ended up having more pit road issues. The 00 was spinning at the entrance of pit road.
Custer began to have a power steering issue late in Stage 2. When the cars came down the frontstretch at the end of Stage 2, Custer found himself spinning around. That Andy’s Frozen Custard Ford sure looks great, but it can’t catch a dang break today.
Overall, the racing we are seeing right now is great. It’s fantastic. These drivers are proving that NASCAR makes sense in a street race format. Without the rain this year, we’ve seen the full potential of this event.
Cole Custer is going to keep fighting hard. He just has to catch a break. Eventually, he has to catch one, right?
