Colin Cowherd sends a pointed message to the Pittsburgh Steelers
With the NFL season nearing, quarterback competitions are coming to a close across the league. In Pittsburgh, though, that hasn’t been the case with the Steelers. All three of their quarterback options have played significant time during the team’s pair of preseason games. Fox Sports analyst Colin Cowherd says that’s not the way to go and it’s once again showing a problem in how the Steelers handle business.
Cowherd discussed Pittsburgh’s quarterback decision today on ‘The Herd’. He says this is just another example of the franchise continuing their standard of taking too much time to make a decision they know they’re eventually going to make.

“Here’s my takeaway on Pickett. Everybody in Pittsburgh knows Kenny Pickett is the future. The only question now is when does the future start? It’s always, ‘Well, Mike Tomlin has never had a losing season.’ You’re right. That’s impressive, but is that the standard?,” said Cowherd. “The Steelers have been too slow to make big moves…Here’s Pittsburgh, once again, dragging their feet with Kenny Pickett.”
Pickett has combined to go 19/22 for 171 passing yards and three touchdowns. He has looked comfortable in the Pittsburgh offense and ended up playing QB2 snaps in their second game against Jacksonville. With these flashes of potential, Colin Cowherd says it’s time to take the bandage off. If you want to get anywhere in the NFL, you have to bet big. With Pickett in the quarterback room, Cowherd thinks it’s time the franchise pulls up a seat at the big spender’s table.

“It’s time to pull the band-aid off. It’s time for Pittsburgh to step up from the $5 blackjack table and go $50 a hand. I know it’s hard. That’s not who you are…but it’s time to let her rip,” said Cowherd. “Step our of your comfort zone. Whoa! Yeah, woah…Let’s go with some whoa.”
Mitchell Trubisky and Mason Rudolph have shown they’re serviceable NFL veterans. However, they’re not the future of the franchise. That designation will eventually belong to Pickett. If he was struggling during camp or preseason, this would be a whole different discussion. With him showing early success, though, Colin Cowherd thinks it’s okay for Pittsburgh’s future to become their present.
“Kenny Pickett’s your future. Only question is when’s the future start? How about today?…It is a hard decision, especially for a franchise and a city that have taken their time. Never been under .500 under Mike Tomlin. I get it. It’s okay. Be proud of that. Sometimes, though, you gotta rip the band-aid off. Let’s do it now.”
