When you think of teams that could be in the Caleb Williams sweepstakes in the 2024 NFL Draft, the Chicago Bears, Arizona Cardinals and Denver Broncos come to mind.

The Pittsburgh Steelers? Well, not exactly and given the fact every Steelers team coached by Mike Tomlin has won eight or more games, the chances Pittsburgh has a pick high enough to select Williams is slim to none.

Colin Cowherd of FS1, however, has an idea. An idea where the Steelers could see Williams be the next top quarterback prospect to don the black and gold. Speaking on the Friday edition of “The Herd with Colin Cowherd,” the sports talk show host said if he were running the Steelers, he’d trade star edge rusher T.J. Watt, up-and-coming wideout George Pickens and three first-round picks to land the No. 1 overall pick to draft Williams.

If you’re following along, that’s a future Hall of Famer, an ascending receiver and three premium picks for a generational prospect who has a 50/50 shot to live up to his lofty billing. Think Cowherd’s got a future as an NFL general manager? Steelers fans — and this may come as a shock — do not.

“This is a horrible take,” one fan wrote on Twitter. “Best pass rusher in the league, 3 first and a quality WR? When has a trade like this ever worked out?”

Caleb Williams living up to hype in second season at USC

Now to be fair, there is a reason Cowherd went over the top on his mock trade to land Williams. That’s because the reigning Heisman Trophy winner has followed up his tremendous 2022 campaign at USC with arguably an even better one in 2023.

Through four games, Williams has been nearly flawless, throwing for 1,200 yards with 15 touchdowns and zero interceptions on 74.3% passing. His 223.1 passer rating ranks second in the nation behind only Tulane’s Michael Pratt (238.0).

Essentially, barring an injury or some unlikely drop-off, Williams will be the slam dunk No. 1 overall pick on April 25, 2024. But no, Williams won’t be a Steeler. There won’t be a team trading the top pick with the best quarterback prospect since Andrew Luck sitting on the board.

But hey, one can dream, right?
