Collin Morikawa breaks down Patrick Mahomes' golf swing ahead of The Match
Patrick Mahomes is looking for a few last-second tips before teeing it up for The Match on Thursday night. He’s getting some help from PGA Tour star Collin Morikawa.
The NFL superstar and teammate Travis Kelce will battle NBA phenoms Steph Curry and Klay Thompson in the 2023 iteration of the unique golf event. But before the two teams hit the links, Morikawa had some tips for Mahomes.
After looking at some video of Mahomes’ swing, he had some positive and negative takeaways.
“We’re hitting power slices,” Morikawa says after watching a few of Mahomes’ swings. “Not fades, power slices all day, coming over the top.”
After watching another, Morikawa adds, “I like that, you’re going a little to your toes. Powerful, though — way more powerful than Klay.”
Morikawa also criticized Mahomes for a 10-finger grip, saying that’s something the quarterback “needs to work on.” But it might be too little, too late, getting these recommendations on the day of The Match.
The PGA Tour star then ended his analysis of the quarterback’s swing with a few words of wisdom for Thursday night.
“Patrick, stick to your fades,” he said. “Aim left, don’t aim right at all. At all costs, don’t aim right.”

How to watch The Match
Golf may not be everyone’s cup of tea, but this unique event allows fans the opportunity to see premier athletes outside of their comfort zone. Trying out a different sport with the cameras rolling can be an entertaining experience.
Mahomes and Kelce will take on Thompson and Curry in this year’s event. It takes place at Wynn’s Golf Club in Las Vegas on Thursday night.
Here are some of the details about how you can watch The Match:
- Date: Thursday, June 29
- Time: 7 p.m. ET (pre-show at 6:30 p.m.)
- TV: TNT, TBS, TruTV, HLN
The Match will also feature a special broadcast team for this year’s event in Vegas. Ernie Johnson — famous for his work on Inside the NBA — will host the event. Trevor Immelman and Charles Barkley will work as analysts. Kathryn Tappen will work as a reporter for the event.
Cart reporters will be NFL star Von Miller and Golden State Warriors standout Draymond Green.
It should be a fun night of golf in Vegas, probably full of trash talk and plenty of great moments. This is exactly the kind of entertainment we love when the sports calendar reaches one of the driest months of the year.
