Colt McCoy elaborates on NFL future, potential venture into coaching, politics moving forward
Colt McCoy dropped by The Pat McAfee Show on Friday to drop some tidbits regarding his future in football.
First off, the Texas football legend and NFL veteran took some time to elaborate on how he spent his 2023 following being cut from the Arizona Cardinals, explaining that after rehabbing his injuries, he’s on the lookout for another opportunity from the league, if it should come about.
“I love the NFL. I love the Xs and Os. I love preparing, breaking teams down, matchups. That’s really what I love about the NFL. So I’m not saying no to playing,” McCoy explained. “Unfortunately I had elbow surgery last January. Battled through it. Had a good training camp. Ended up getting released by the Cardinals. I just wanted to make sure my elbow was better than what it was when I ended with the Cardinals. It didn’t feel great spending a lot of time on rehab.
“If the right opportunity comes up next year, I might jump on it. But I’ve really enjoyed my time with my family, my kids. … I’m in a really good place.”
However, McCoy has his options if he doesn’t get an opportunity to return to the field. The former Longhorns star mentioned he could venture into coaching, or even get into politics if he chooses to go in a different direction.

“My granddad was a coach. My dad was a coach. I haven’t really thought a lot about it,” McCoy added. “The older I’ve got, the more I was kind of in that backup role, the more I really enjoyed each day. Going to practice. Running the scout team. Seeing the looks that our defense was going to show the opponent that week. Being able to give some feedback to our defensive coordinator. ‘Hey, I saw this easy, you should switch this up. Blitz this out of a different front.’ All those types of things. I really dug deep into the scheme and philosophy of different coaches and systems. I enjoyed that piece of it. I enjoy seeing matchups and formation things to get the look we want. It happens during the game and we hit it. Those are all really fun things. It’s fulfillment.
“I’m not going to close the door on coaching. I’m not going to close the door on anything. Politics, coaching. I don’t know what the future holds. I love the game. Regardless if I get to play again next year, if I get into coaching, I want to stay involved in some capacity, because it’s been what I’ve done my whole life.”
Evidently, there’s no shortage of options for Colt McCoy. The football world will be keeping an eye on whatever the former Texas star decides to do next.
