Indianapolis Colts rookie quarterback Anthony Richardson flashed his brilliant upside early in the 2023 season. However, he battled injuries and ultimately needed to have season-ending shoulder surgery.

Head coach Shane Steichen shared that Richardson is in good spirits following his shoulder and noted that the focus is now on rehabbing and finding ways to improve as a player despite the injury.

“The biggest thing is getting the rehab, getting his shoulder right, and then staying focused throughout the season in these meetings, still being dialed in at practice, all those things,” Steichen said. “I think you can learn during this time to become a better player for next year.”

On Tuesday, it was Indianapolis Colts owner Jim Irsay who announced that Anthony Richardson’s surgery was a success. He posted, “It was a long procedure and his shoulder injury has been repaired. No new surprises were found during surgery – they just repaired what was expected. Anthony is doing well and thanks everyone for the support.”

Anthony Richardson ended his rookie season having played in four games. In those games, he completed 59.5 percent of his passes for 577 yards and three touchdowns. He also rushed for four touchdowns on the ground. It was on a designed rush that Richardson was injured.

Prior to this season-ending injury, Anthony Richardson also missed time due to being in concussion protocol.

Richardson’s rushing ability is part of what makes him a special player. However, at the NFL level, the chance for an injury on these plays is much greater. Going forward, it’s going to be incredibly important for the Colts and Richardson to find a way to take advantage of his skills while also protecting him from more injuries in the future.

According to Steichen, Richardson is going to stay in California, where he had his surgery, to begin his rehab process. Later, he is going to return to Indianapolis where the majority of his rehab is going to occur.

Shane Steichen weighs in on season-ending decision for Anthony Richardson

The decision to get surgery for Anthony Richardson prematurely ended his rookie season. This was a decision that head coach Shane Steichen described as the best for both him and the team.

“This is the best thing for him and this franchise moving forward so we can get him healthy for next season,” Steichen said. “You take a guy fourth overall, a tremendous competitor, a great player, the longevity of him needs to be at a premium.”

The Colts have a lot invested in Anthony Richardson moving forward. He needs to be able to stay healthy to be effective for them, which is going to mean learning to take fewer hits.
