Colts QB Gardner Minshew comments on Anthony Richardson's development
The Indianapolis Colts spent their first round pick on Anthony Richardson, a quarterback out of Florida who is expected to become the face of the franchise. However, he’s raw and needs time to develop as a quarterback.
One player who Anthony Richardson is going to have to lean on is Gardner Minshew. Despite still being a relatively young player, Minshew has become the veteran presence in Indianapolis. He wants to help Richardson too and thinks it’s exciting to watch him grow.
“First time kind of being the older guy, it’s a little bit different. It’s cool to be able to help. Wherever I can, helping him — to see the things that he’s picking up, it’s exciting. I remember kind of doing the same stuff and remembering how hard, but also how fun it is when that starts clicking. It’s been cool to kind of see that part,” Minshew said.
“[M]y performance doesn’t really have anything to do with his performance. I can go out there and be great and it’s not going to affect him. He can go out there and be great and it’s not going to affect me. So, I think our whole room is just pushing to be the best that we can be and that way serves the team the best we can.”
Gardner Minshew, Anthony Richardson, and Sam Ehlinger remain supportive of each other. Minshew is even helping Richardson between minicamp and training camp.

“It’s been cool to see him — he studies hard, he picks it up, he wants to learn,” Minshew said. “So, he’s been doing a great job there. He has been improving steadily and I think he will continue to.”
Mike Tannenbaum says Anthony Richardson shouldn’t start in 2023
One thing most experts agreed on was that Anthony Richardson needs time to develop. It’s because of this that former NFL GM and current analyst for ESPN Mike Tannenbaum says that Richardson shouldn’t start in 2023.
“Absolutely not. What’s so important is Anthony Richardson needs to be great for the next 10 years. If the Colts are, whatever it is, 4-13? 7-10 this year? It doesn’t matter. What matters is that he’s great for a long time. So, take all the time,” Tannenbaum said.
“You have Gardner Minshew. You can win games with him. Just go out on the front end and say, ‘Hey we’re gonna play Anthony Richardson whenever he’s ready. There is no rushing this season.’”
