One of the more anticipated hockey games in some time could not have ended in a more dramatic fashion. Canada’s Connor McDavid scored a game-winning overtime goal against the United States, winning the 4-Nations Face-Off Championship.

McDavid may be the hero but Jordan Binnington is a close second. Controversially getting the job of starting goalie, Binnington came up huge for Canada during overtime. Multiple big-time saves were made to keep the United States from winning. A flurry was coming from the Americans but they could not surpass Binnington.

Eventually, Canada got an offensive zone face off and somehow, the best player in the world was wide open in the middle of the ice. Not many, if any, goalies in hockey would be able to save this shot as McDavid is lethal.

You can check out the goal from McDavid, the ensuing Canadian celebrations, and heartbreak from the American players.

McDavid is already considered one of the game’s greatest-ever players. His play with the Edmonton Oilers has amazed hockey fans since he entered the league. While there has yet to be a Stanley Cup championship, three Hart Trophies and the Conn Smythe Trophy speak for the individual resume.

Now, there is a championship for him to celebrate on the international stage. In the first best-on-best international hockey tournament in years, Canada is back where it feels like it belongs.

Moving over to the United States, there was a lot of passion coming from the locker room. Both of the Tkachuk brothers, Brady and Matthew, spoke about how big of a moment this championship game was. Brady wound up scoring a goal to tie the game in the first period. Matthew did not have the day he might have imagined, dealing with an injury and getting on the ice for less than eight minutes.

USA captain Auston Matthews was the one who had those great opportunities saved by Binnington in overtime. He too, like McDavid, was chasing his first major piece of hardware in the tournament. The chance once again alluded him.

This United States-Canada rivalry is far from over. One year from now brings the Winter Olympics as the hockey world will head to Milan, Italy. Everyone will be anticipating this as the gold medal game next February to set up another huge moment between the North American countries.

For now, Canada is the one who gets to celebrate in Boston, winning the first-ever 4-Nations Face-Off.
