Conor McGregor claims trilogy fight Nate Diaz will happen for 'BMF' belt
Conor McGregor claimed he’ll complete his trilogy with Nate Diaz in the UFC for the “BMF” belt after winning it from Justin Gaethje.
McGregor previously pivoted off potential opponent Michael Chandler and eyed Gaethje, who just won the symbolic belt over Dustin Poirier. Diaz, who’s currently out of the UFC, has a boxing match against former YouTube star Jake Paul on Saturday.
So once that boxing match is done, McGregor wants Diaz right back in the UFC, after he takes care of business of course.
“Regardless of that nonsense match me and Nate will be completing the trilogy,” McGregor wrote on Twitter. “I am going to go grab that (BMF) belt right quick for us to compete for it in the trilogy.”
Any potential fight for the “BMF” belt between McGregor and Gaethje is all speculation and talk. McGregor was supposed to be paired against Chandler following the conclusion of the current season of The Ultimate Fighter.
However, that fight has yet to materialize.
Gaethje responded to McGregor’s original callout in a tweet simply reading: “Sign the contract big boy.”
With nothing official there, and McGregor not stepping into an octagon in two years, there seems to be a lot or very little options for the former two-division champion.
McGregor and Diaz were bitter rivals in the UFC. A chance injury to former lightweight champion Rafael Dos Anjos set the stage for McGregor versus Diaz at UFC 196 in March of 2016, Diaz won via rear naked choke in the second round to stun McGregor, who was undefeated in the UFC up to that point.

The two fought five months later at UFC 202, a win by majority decision for McGregor. McGregor would go on to win his second belt in a lightweight title fight over Eddie Alvarez in November before turning to boxing in a fight against Floyd Mayweather.
Since the lightweight title win, McGregor is 1-3 in the UFC over the course of seven years. He lost a title fight to Khabib Nurmagomedov, knocked out Donald Cerrone in a welterweight bout and lost two fights to Poirier in 2021.
A broken leg sidelined McGregor following his trilogy fight with Poirier but it seems like the Diaz fight is always there. And fans might still want it.
Diaz is 21-13 in his MMA career, last fighting in September, a submission win over Tony Ferguson. Diaz previously had a “BMF” bout with Jorge Masvidal in 2019, which was won by the latter fighter in a TKO doctor stoppage after three rounds.
McGregor and Diaz always teased a third fight and with the Irishman running around claiming he’ll beat Chandler, but rather fight Gaethje first then Diaz, who knows what will happen?
As of now, there’s nothing official, but just social media talk from McGregor.
