The Pittsburgh Steelers and tight end Pat Freiermuth agreed to terms on a four-year, $48.4 million contract extension this past Friday.

Details of Freiermuth’s deal came out Wednesday. According to Spotrac and relayed by Steelers Now, Freiermuth’s deal is essentially a five-year deal worth $49.9 million. Freiermuth will earn $1.1 million in base salary in 2024 with a $10.5 million signing bonus. The signing bonus is spread out throughout the duration of the deal, making his cap hit this season $3.64 million.

His 2025 cap hit will be the largest, coming in at $12.885 million. All of the guaranteed money in the deal comes in the first two years. The Steelers will incur a $6.3 million dead cap penalty if they trade or released Freiermuth after the 2025 season.

Freiermuth, 25, became the ninth highest-paid tight end in the NFL with the new deal.

Pat Freiermuth signs contract extension ahead of Week 1

Freiermuth, the Steelers’ 2021 second round pick out of Penn State, has been steady in three seasons in Pittsburgh. He has appeared in 45 games, hauling in 159 receptions for 1,564 yards and 11 touchdowns. Freiermuth tallied a career-high 63 catches for 732 yards, to go along with two scores in 2022. He missed time in 2023 with a hamstring injury, catching 32 passes for 308 yards and two touchdowns. Freiermuth hauled in four receptions for 27 yards in the Steelers’ 18-10 Week 1 victory over the Atlanta Falcons.

“We were just so happy for Pat, man,” quarterback Russell Wilson said last Friday. “He’s worked his tail off, just his composure, his leadership. I remember when I first got here … a bunch of us went out to dinner, and Pat was just talking about leadership, and I was able to listen to him and just hear, even though he’s such a young, talented player, he already exudes this leadership about him and his confidence.

“It’s really tremendous. I’m excited for him, man. Anytime a guy gets acknowledgement in terms of financially and his family and everything else for all the hard work he’s done, that’s always a huge thing.”
