Corey Heim won his second straight pole at Homestead-Miami, swept the stages, but fell short to finish P3 tonight. The NASCAR Truck Series driver had a bizarre mechanical issue that caused his truck to shut off multiple times.

Even with his truck shutting off multiple times, Corey Heim had a chance to win this race. But the problems were too much. Both Layne Riggs and Kyle Larson passed him in the closing laps.

After the race, Heim talked about the mechanical issues. He couldn’t explain it. The Tricon team will try to diagnose the problem and make sure it doesn’t happen again.

“Yeah, just about 15-20 to go Everything seemed fine as far as what I could see,” Heim explained to Carson Hocevar. “The engine would hard cut on me and the dash would go black. I’d have to pull my right hand over and fully recycle the power to get any sort of life back in the motor.

“So, really don’t know what the problem was to be honest with you. But can’t say enough about the Safelite Toyota Tundra TRD Pro. Everyone at Tricon Garage and Toyota did a phenomenal job. Probably the best truck I’ve ever had, really. So, this stings pretty bad obviously but nothing I can really have done about it.”

Corey Heim has won a lot of races. He has also lost a few that he should have easily won. But when Kyle Larson is running down the field from the back like a rocketship to the moon, there isn’t much you can do.

Larson doesn’t think he could have beaten Heim without the mechanical issues. But they did happen. Layne Riggs tried to hold him off as well. That didn’t work too well, either.

Corey Heim falls short of third win

So far this season, Corey Heim has two wins, a top-5, a pole award, and one disappointing P23 finish. He has the same number of wins in the first four races of the season than he did in the first eight races last year.

Today, he came up short. He has to chalk that up to a freak mechanical issue and move on. This Tricon Garage team is fantastic. Going to Martinsville, a track Heim has won at before, he is hoping to add that third win to his record this season.

The six wins last season were fantastic. Tihs season, Heim could have even more. Drivers like Layne Riggs showed that they won’t be beaten easily, though. And when someone like Kyle Larson enters the race, the intensity will only go up.
