Court of Arbitration contacted wrong US officials over Jordan Chiles bronze medal case, per report
The Jordan Chiles case regarding her bronze medal continues, even after the Court of Arbitration (CAS) ruled she would not get the honor.
According to Christine Brennan of the USA TODAY, the CAS did not “reach out” to the correct US officials after the Romanians appealed the decision in Paris. The rules state they must notify both parties and while CAS thought they reached out to the United States, it wound up being the wrong people.
“The screw-ups continue in the Jordan Chiles case: I’m hearing that the Court of Arbitration for Sport did not reach out to the right US officials as CAS prepared for last week’s Romanian appeal in Paris,” Brennan said via X. “They are supposed to notify both sides and they got the wrong US officials.”
Earlier on Monday, USA Gymnastics released a statement saying CAS would not be awarding Chiles her bronze medal for the women’s floor event taking place on Aug. 5. A statement was released saying they would continue to fight a battle against them, hoping to get Chiles her first-ever individual Olympic medal.
“USA Gymnastics was notified by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) on Monday that their rules do not allow for an arbitral award to be reconsidered even when conclusive new evidence is presented,” USA Gymnastics said in a statement.
“We are deeply disappointed by the notification and will continue to pursue every possible avenue and appeal process, including to the Swiss Federal Tribunal, to ensure the just scoring, placement, and medal award for Jordan.”

More on Jordan Chiles, appeal for bronze medal
Chiles participated in the women’s floor event, originally scoring a 13.666. This was good enough for fifth place and originally, placing the UCLA star out of range for the podium. However, Team USA used an inquiry to double-check the score based on difficulty. As a result, Chiles was bumped up to a score of 13.766 and overall third place.
After an appeal from the Romanian gymnasts, the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) reneged on Chiles’ third-place upgrade, returning her to her initial fifth-place finish. Along with FIG’s decision regarding the scoring of the event, the International Olympic Committee ruled Chiles must return her medal.
The CAS claimed Landi’s appeal for Chiles’ score came 1 minute, four seconds after the conclusion of her routine. For reference, coaches have a one-minute window to legally appeal the judges’ score of a routine.
Chiles has not commented too much throughout the process. On Saturday, she posted two Instagram stories, one of which was multiple broken heart emojis. The next one said, “I am taking this time and removing myself from social media for my mental health thank you.”
