United States gymnast Jordan Chiles is attempting to keep her bronze medal earned during the 2024 Paris Olympics. The latest turn occurred on Monday when the Court of Arbitration ruled to take the medal away and award it to Ana Barbosu of Romania.

The competition took place a week ago on Aug. 5. Despite the ruling from the Court of Arbitration, it appears as if USA Gymnastics is not done fighting, wanting to get Chiles her first-ever individual Olympic medal.

“USA Gymnastics was notified by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) on Monday that their rules do not allow for an arbitral award to be reconsidered even when conclusive new evidence is presented,” USA Gymnastics said in a statement.

“We are deeply disappointed by the notification and will continue to pursue every possible avenue and appeal process, including to the Swiss Federal Tribunal, to ensure the just scoring, placement, and medal award for Jordan.”

Chiles participated in the women’s floor event, originally scoring a 13.666. This was good enough for fifth place and originally, placing the UCLA star out of range for the podium. However, Team USA used an inquiry to double-check the score based on difficulty. As a result, Chiles was bumped up to a score of 13.766 and overall third place.

After an appeal from the Romanian gymnasts, the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) reneged on Chiles’ third-place upgrade, returning her to her initial fifth-place finish. Along with FIG’s decision regarding the scoring of the event, the International Olympic Committee ruled Chiles must return her medal.

The CAS claimed Landi’s appeal for Chiles’ score came 1 minute, four seconds after the conclusion of her routine. For reference, coaches have a one-minute window to legally appeal the judges’ score of a routine.

Chiles has not commented too much throughout the process. On Saturday, she posted two Instagram stories, one of which was multiple broken heart emojis. The next one said, “I am taking this time and removing myself from social media for my mental health thank you.”

There was still some hardware Chiles was able to bring home from Paris. She was a member of the all-around women’s team, taking home the gold medal after only winning silver during the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo. Chiles performed all four aspects of the competition, joining Simone Biles as the only member to do so.
