Cowboys EVP Stephen Jones evaluates Mike McCarthy's performance, addresses future
Dallas Cowboys Executive Vice President Stephen Jones has enjoyed what he’s seen from the team and head coach Mike McCarthy lately. On Wednesday, Jones was asked about the job McCarthy has done after the team won two of the last three games.
“I think he’s done outstanding. Our guys are playing hard,” Jones said, per Jon Machota of The Athletic. “He’s got them competing. That was a tough game the other night. Guys played hard. “Guys are competing. Hats off to Mike. You look around the league sometimes and see a lot of teams that start like that and they’re thinking about next year. But Mike has everybody focused on winning each and every game.”
Stephen Jones was then asked if the Cowboys had decided on Mike McCarthy’s future. “We’re talking about the next game,” he said. Jones was then asked if there was ever a conversation about potentially looking at Bill Belichick as the Cowboys coach. Again, he said, “Like I said, we’re worried about the next game.”
Despite the rough 2024 season, it would not be a surprise if McCarthy returns to the Cowboys next season. Injuries to key players such as Dak Prescott, Micah Parsons and DeMarvion Overshown have slowed the Cowboys down this year, and McCarthy led the Cowboys to three consecutive 12-5 seasons (2021-2023). That said, the Cowboys could do a reset, meaning that a new head coach would be put in place.

Dak Prescott shares thoughts on Mike McCarthy
“Your coach seems like he’s playing on his last contract and [I’m] almost feeling helpless like I can’t help him in this situation, especially a guy you believe in so much and you believe in being your head coach,” Prescott told Yahoo Sports earlier this month. “Control what I can control, help and support Mike to every extent that I can.”
Prescott added: “I believe in him wholeheartedly. I don’t want to necessarily get into the nuts and the screws of it all obviously, but I think he definitely deserves a chance — another contract and a chance to coach this team amongst more influence. ‘On his terms’ may be a good way to say it. But I wholeheartedly believe in him.”
