The Cowboys fear they have lost star cornerback Trevon Diggs for the rest of the 2023 season. Dallas believes the two-time Pro Bowler tore his ACL during a one-on-one drill in practice on Thursday.

Executive vicep president Stephen Jones explained what happened to Diggs on Thursday.

“He just took an awkward step trying to make a play on the ball and unfortunately it torqued the wrong way and got his knee, not unlike (DeMarvion) Overshown in the Seattle game,” he said, per Jon Machota of The Athletic. “It didn’t look like much but when those steps get awkward, unfortunately sometimes the ligaments don’t hold up.”

Diggs has reached the Pro Bowl in each of the last two seasons. He was in his fourth season in the NFL, spending all four years with the Cowboys.

Through two games in 2023, Diggs totaled four tackles, an interception and a forced fumble. The Cowboys are off to a 2-0 start, defeating the Giants and Jets in the first two weeks of the season.

Trevon Diggs releases statement following injury

Shortly after the news broke, Diggs took to social media. He posted a message to fans, thanking them for their support following the news.

“Thank you for all the prayers and I appreciate everyone for checking on me! This is just God’s Plan,” Diggs said. “I will be back and better!”

One of Diggs’ teammates, start linebacker Micah Parsons, also sent out a message on X (formerly Twitter).

“I am my brothers keeper,” Parsons wrote. “I got you 7! No more need to be said!”

Diggs is a key piece of a Cowboys defense that has been dominant through two games. Dallas shutout the Giants in a 40-0 victory in Week 1. Last weekend, the Cowboys defeated the Jets 30-10.

Reports of Diggs’ injury surfaced Thursday afternoon.

NFL.com’s Tom Pelissero and Ian Rapoport reported on Diggs’ injury on Thursday afternoon. The Cowboys were not optimistic from the start.

“The #Cowboys fear that Pro Bowl CB Trevon Diggs suffered a torn ACL in practice today, sources tell me and @RapSheet,” Pelissero said via Twitter.

After Pelissero’s report, Rapoport followed it up by providing some level of context.

“With Trevon Diggs feared to have torn his ACL in a non-contact 1-on-1 drill at practice today, the Cowboys are looking at potentially losing one of their top defenders,” Rapoport said.

It’s a tough blow for the Cowboys and for Diggs to start the 2023 season.
