Cowboys EVP Stephen Jones unveils telling update on team's offseason plans

Dallas Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones had some interesting things to say about the team’s plan for the offseason. While speaking to reporters on Monday, Jones said the Cowboys will be “selectively aggressive” this year.
“We’re gonna look at everything we can. “We’re going to be selectively aggressive,” Stephen Jones said, per Jon Machota of The Athletic. “…You have certain amount of resources they’ll allow to have. We’ll look at that, but we’re going to try to improve our football team, not try but we’re gonna improve our football team. We expect to have success next year.”
The Cowboys finished the 2024 season with a 7-10 record, their first losing season since 2020. Once the season ended, the Cowboys made changes to the coaching staff, including promoting Brian Schottenheimer to head coach after being the team’s offensive coordinator.
Dallas was not aggressive during the offseason last year, which frustrated fans. And while is easy to say that the lack of offseason moves led to the Cowboys’ struggles in 2024, the team suffered injuries to key players, including quarterback Dak Prescott and pass rusher Micah Parsons.

More on the Dallas Cowboys offseason plans
Speaking of Parsons, re-signing him seems to be an offseason goal for the Cowboys. While speaking with Dianna Russini of The Athletic earlier this month (per CBS Sports), he said the 2025 offseason will “be in line” with previous years and the team will focus on getting a new deal for Parsons.
Jerry Jones also talked about being surprised the Cowboys did not play in this year’s Super Bowl. “I wouldn’t have signed Dak Prescott, the highest-paid player in the NFL if now wasn’t when we wanted to win. This is a shocker to be here at this Super Bowl and not have the Cowboys here,” Jones said. “I didn’t plan on that when I made that agreement with him. So we’re going to do everything we can to get there.”
It will be an interesting offseason for the Cowboys who could lose some key players due to free agency. Some of the players who are set to be free agents are wide receiver Brandin Cooks, defensive lineman DeMarcus Lawrence, linebacker Eric Kendricks and cornerback Jourdan Lewis. The Cowboys will need to find another offensive lineman as Zack Martin recently announced he’s planning to retire.
