The Dallas Cowboys and head coach Mike McCarthy are hoping to have former All-Pro cornerback Stephon Gilmore healthy for the postseason. However, after suffering an injury in the last week of the season, his status has been up in the air.

Gilmore suffered a shoulder injury during Dallas’ win over Washington. Losing him ahead of the playoffs would be huge. Luckily, ahead of the first round, McCarthy shared a positive update on Gilmore.

“He’s making really good progress,” McCarthy said. However, Gilmore isn’t expected to do anything in practice until Sunday.

This is Gilmore’s first season with the Dallas Cowboys. Across from Tevon Diggs, the pair has become one of the best cornerback tandems in the entire NFL and together they’ve been a key piece of Dallas’ success this season and ultimately winning the NFC East. However, Gilmore being banged up could be an issue for the team.

He left ahead of halftime against Washington with a shoulder injury that he sustained making a tackle. Initially, Gilmore was ruled questionable to return but later was ruled out for the game. Despite that, following the win over Washington, McCarthy was positive about his status for the Wild Card.

“He told me he was fine and he’d be ready to go,” McCarthy said.

In 17 games this season, Stephon Gilmore has 68 tackles, 13 passes defended, and two interceptions.

The Cowboys are getting ready to take on the Green Bay Packers in the first round. It’s a matchup that Dallas is favored in but could be tricky, especially if the Cowboys are missing one of their best players on the defensive side of the ball.

Jerry Jones ‘couldn’t be more pleased’ with Mike McCarthy

At this point in the season, Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones is thrilled with the job Mike McCarthy has done.

“I couldn’t be more pleased with what he’s done and how he’s coached. … I really mean it. He has really made as big a difference from his head coaching vantage point as anybody could from any vantage point in the NFL. He’s the big difference this year,” Jones said.

“I just think his record speaks for itself. I think of what he has done and that we’ve put ourselves in this position over these last three years. Think that does speak for itself. We’ve got a lot of football left and no small part thanks to Mike. … We’ll see how each game goes.”
