The Dallas Cowboys were one of three NFL teams to lead the league with eight Pro Bowl nods after yet another 12-5 record last season. Cornerback DaRon Bland and kicker Brandon Aubrey both made the Pro Bowl for the first time after setting new NFL records. Is there a player on the roster for 2024 who can do the same or similar? The DallasCowboys.com insiders broke it down this week, arguing for several different players, but two of the team’s writers picked the same player to reach their first Pro Bowl this year – DeMarvion Overshown.

It’s a bold prediction, especially considering Overshown tore his ACL last year and missed his entire rookie season. Even so, the coaches and writers alike seem to love him.

“Even if he isn’t quite ready when he makes his way to the West Coast (for training camp), his impact with added muscle to his upper half and a deeper understanding of an NFL defense after marinating in meeting rooms for the last year will be felt,” Nick Harris wrote. “His ability to cover any type of offensive weapon in the receiving game and his ability to fill running lanes out of the second level will create a big impact.”

Writer Kyle Youman also picked Overshown. He argued that the former Lonhorn is not only likely to play to Pro Bowl-worthy standards, but he also needs to.

“His explosiveness, versatility, and football IQ all put him in a position to be successful,” Youmans said. “Mike Zimmer’s defense needs a piece like him to tie everything together at the second level. Meaning he’ll have ample opportunity to turn some heads.”

High expectations set for Overshown’s second season

The Cowboys selected Overshown with their third-round selection in the 2023 NFL Draft. He appeared ready for significant snaps until his ACL tear knocked him out in the preseason. In the Cowboys’ preseason opener against the Jacksonville Jaguars, Overshown led the team huddle after warmups and recorded six combined tackles by halftime to pace all of Dallas’ defenders.

Head coach Mike McCarthy said he had been “climbing the charts” before the injury. After rehabbing with teammates and fellow rookies John Stephens Jr. and wide receiver David Durden, he’s ready to get back to work at training camp.

The last time Overshown played a full regular season of football, he earned All-Big 12 first-team honors. To make the Pro Bowl in his second season, he’ll likely need to top at least 130 tackles while being extremely disruptive in the backfield. He could benefit from coming up with a few takeaways as well. Overshown had three interceptions while at Texas, as well as three fumble recoveries.
