Report: Creed Humphrey agrees to new deal with Chiefs, becomes highest-paid center in NFL history
Creed Humphrey has agreed to a four-year extension with the Kansas City Chiefs, according to multiple reports. It will make him the highest-paid center in NFL history.
Humphrey’s new deal will be worth $72 million, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported, and will include $50 million in guaranteed money. It’s a huge contract for the former Oklahoma star, who cemented himself as a stalwart on the Chiefs offensive line.
At $18 million annually, Humphrey now moves past Jason Kelce for the highest-paid center in league history, according to Spotrac. Kelce made $14.25 million with the Philadelphia Eagles.
Humphrey was second team All-Pro last season as he helped Kansas City to its second straight Super Bowl victory. He has also made two Pro Bowls to start his career and it resulted in a lucrative extension to stay with the Chiefs for the long haul.
Kansas City selected Humphrey in the second round of the 2021 NFL Draft out of Oklahoma, where he was a two-time Big 12 Offensive Lineman of the Year and a third team All-American. Since arriving at the next level, he hasn’t missed a game, appearing in all 51 games during his first three seasons.

By extending Humphrey, the Chiefs fortify their offensive line that much more as they look to pull off an unprecedented three-peat. The next contract question mark is at right guard as Trey Smith also awaits a new contract.
Earlier in training camp, Patrick Mahomes addressed the need for extensions on the offensive line. He said he joked with general manager Brett Veach about his ability to find talent in the draft, but added he hopes everyone gets their fair share.
“Your hope is that everybody gets paid,” Mahomes said, via The Athletic’s Nate Taylor. “I tell Veach all the time: ‘You draft too well.’ It’s a good problem to have. I’m excited for those guys and it all gets handled in the right way. The hope is to keep this core together. I’ll have that flexibility in my contract to help get them some money as much as possible.”
News of Creed Humphrey’s extension came as the Chiefs were getting ready to take on the Chicago Bears in the final preseason game of the year Thursday night at Arrowhead Stadium. The starters are expected to rest in the finale, which is the final appetizer before the season officially gets underway in primetime Sept. 5 against the Baltimore Ravens.
