Dak Prescott addresses heat on Mike McCarthy: 'It should be about me as well'

Immediately following the Dallas Cowboys’ loss to the Green Bay Packers in the wild card round of the NFL playoffs on Sunday speculation began about the job security of coach Mike McCarthy.

McCarthy has won 12 games with the Cowboys in each of the past three years, but the Cowboys have had three early exits from the playoffs in those three seasons.

Many have speculated owner Jerry Jones could make a move. But at least one person in the building thinks McCarthy should get more credit for everything he’s done with the organization.

“Yeah, he’s been amazing. I understand the business,” quarterback Dak Prescott said. “In that case, it should be about me as well. I’ve had the season that I’ve had because of him, and this team has had the success that they’ve had because of him.”

Dallas won the NFC East for the second time in three years under McCarthy, putting together a 12-5 regular-season record.

But it was all for naught, as the Packers dominated Sunday’s playoff game from start to finish en route to a 48-32 win. The calls for McCarthy’s job came from a handful of corners, and commentators and broadcasters alike speculated on the next few days for McCarthy.

One, FOX broadcaster Greg Olsen, thinks a move would be preposterous.

“I think the conversation about replacing Mike McCarthy is crazy talk, so let me just preface it by saying that,” Olsen said. “I always think the best exercise is if you let go your coach, would anyone else hire him? I think the answer with Mike McCarthy is clear. I think teams would jump over themselves to hire him to have this level of consistent success. So if the answer to that question is yes, that answers it.”

For his part, McCarthy hasn’t yet spent much time worrying about it. His focus was on the playoffs up until Sunday night.

He admitted the Packers surprised his team.

“I don’t think anyone saw this coming,” McCarthy said. “We didn’t get it done in any of the phases.”

Later, McCarthy addressed his future.

“I think the biggest thing is we’re disappointed. … I haven’t thought past the outcome of this game.”
