Dak Prescott has 'all the leverage' to become NFL's highest-ever paid quarterback
CeeDee Lamb got his deal done with the Dallas Cowboys on Monday. Next up appears to be his quarterback, with Dak Prescott entering the final season of his contract. It’s a scenario where the Cowboys do not have a ton of leverage, with Prescott controlling the negotiation.
Being a two-time franchise tag recipient is a huge reason why Prescott is in line to receive such a big payday. Once the current contract is up, there is no way for Dallas to guarantee he remains with the team. And while the Cowboys might want to get a deal done, it all comes down to Prescott.
“That was one of the better negotiating moves from his agent, Todd France, to get the Cowboys to tag him a second time,” Rapoport said. “Basically making it impossible to tag for the rest of his career. That’s one reason why Dak Prescott has all the leverage he has right now. And make no mistake — he has, literally, all the leverage. The Cowboys would clearly like to get a long-term deal done.”
Different numbers have been thrown around what Prescott might receive on an annual basis. $60 million has been a common theme, being $5 million more than Joe Burrow, Jordan Love, and Trevor Lawrence per year. The goal for Prescott appears to be to become the highest-paid quarterback in the NFL.

If Dallas is not willing to shell out that kind of cash, Prescott will hit the open market. Rapoport believes the nine-year veteran would become “the biggest free agent in NFL history.”

“If it gets done, he is no doubt going to be the new highest-paid quarterback in the NFL,” Rapoport said. “And here are really the options. It is either take a deal that resets the quarterback market, something Dak Prescott is proud of, that his agent is proud of, the union. The whole world knows this is a great deal.
“Or just go be the biggest free agent in NFL history. Those are really the options for Dak Prescott, that’s the situation he’s in.”
The opportunity to make sure Prescott remains a Cowboy might be a smaller window than you think. Dallas opens the season against Cleveland on Sept. 8, with game-week preparations starting on Sept. 1.
“I would say the Cowboys have a week or so, maybe, to get this done,” Rapoport said. “But the stakes are incredibly high.”
