Dak Prescott injury update: Dallas Cowboys QB makes effort to avoid season-ending surgery
Dak Prescott will reportedly visit another specialist on Monday in an attempt to avoid season-ending surgery on his hamstring, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero.
“People familiar with Prescott’s prognosis say surgery is the most likely outcome,” the report read. “But Prescott wants to play, sources say, and he is determined to exhaust all options before giving up on returning this season. He has been seeing doctors and having scans sent as the decision-making process continues.”
Initially, Prescott was going on injured reserve and then the Cowboys reversed course. ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported the latest twist Saturday afternoon, saying Prescott was bound for season-ending surgery.
Cowboys EVP Stephen Jones hinted at surgery earlier in the week, say the option was on the table. Something changed since he talked, though, as the recommendation did come in to get the operation scheduled.

“More than likely, he’ll be on (injured reserve) by the end of the week,” Jones said on Thursday. “We’re just making sure we’re checking all the options. With his situation, it’s probably gonna be one that is gonna take a full four weeks before he could even think about making a return, if not longer… At some point (the injury) could (require surgery). No one is recommending it now.”
Prescott has dealt with a season-ending injury before, going back to the 2020 season. Dallas did not fare too well without him and finished with a 6-10 record. However, it did help them acquire a high enough draft pick to select Micah Parsons.
Prescott was in the midst of an up-and-down year after signing a lucrative contract extension ahead of the season, which made him the NFL’s highest-paid player. He completed 64.7% of his passes – the second-worst rate of his career – for 1,978 yards, 11 touchdowns and eight interceptions.
