Dak Prescott injury update: Dallas Cowboys QB to undergo season-ending surgery
Dallas Cowboys (3-6) owner Jerry Jones revealed on 105.3 The Fan Tuesday that quarterback Dak Prescott will undergo season-ending hamstring surgery Wednesday in New York, per Jon Machota of The Athletic.
Prescott will return in 2025, with Cooper Rush and perhaps Trey Lance as well, getting the reps under center for the final eight games of the 2024 season. Dallas also signed Will Grier to its practice squad on Monday.
“His prognosis is wonderful. It just means we’re not going to have him for the rest of the year,” Jones said, via Todd Archer of ESPN.
Prescott, 31, had an up-and-down year after signing a lucrative contract extension ahead of the season, which made him the NFL’s highest-paid player. He completed 64.7% of his passes – the second-worst rate of his career – for 1,978 yards, 11 touchdowns and eight interceptions.

Cowboys’ offense struggles without Dak Prescott
Prescott sustained the injury in the third quarter of the 27-21 Week 9 road defeat to the Atlanta Falcons (6-4). Rush got the start in Week 10, a 34-6 home loss to the Philadelphia Eagles (7-2). Rush completed 13-of-23 passes for just 45 yards as the Cowboys finished the game with 146 total yards.
Lance replaced Rush late in the game, throwing for 21 yards and an interception. Jones said the team will stick with Rush as its starting quarterback in this Monday’s Week 11 home tilt against the Houston Texans (6-4): “He does give us our best chance [to win].”
“He was not the Cooper Rush we know,” Jones added. “A lot of things went wrong for us out there [Sunday]. He can play better than that.”
The Cowboys have dropped four games in a row after getting off to a 3-2 start.
