Dak Prescott reveals 'Texas Coast' nickname for offense
Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott is excited for the transformation that the offense is set to undergo in 2023. After the team parted ways with offensive coordinator Kellen Moore this offseason, coach Mike McCarthy will take over the play calling duties.
According to both Prescott and McCarthy, around 30-35% of the playbook is new. The offense will employ some of the West Coast style that McCarthy ran when he was in Green Bay, prompting Prescott to come up with a fitting nickname for it.
“Funny, this is the Texas Coast,” the QB said. “We just renamed it that, the quarterbacks. It’s got definitely some West Coast principles, but has a little bit of what we’ve done in the past and just obviously marrying them together with a lot of detail and maybe in a sense, a system that’s not out there. So there you go.”
The Cowboys hope that the new offense will lead to more success this season. Dallas was solid last season to rank fourth in points and 11th in yards. However, that was a step back from 2021 in which the Cowboys led the NFL in both categories.
Dallas made several changes to its rosters this offseason, including parting ways with running back Ezekiel Elliott and tight end Dalton Schultz. The team also drafted tight end Luke Schoonmaker and traded for receiver Brandin Cooks to add a pair of offensive playmakers.

That in mind, it will be a new-look offense in 2023 and it will be interesting to see how things play out on the field.
Dak Prescott ‘in a good spot’ with new offense
Prescott missed a total of five games in 2022 due to injury, but still threw for a league-high 15 interceptions, which is also the most of his career. There is hope that the new offense can limit some of those mistakes, and the quarterback is so far feeling confident early on.
“I think I’m in a good spot,” Prescott said. “There’s more to grow. I’ll use these five weeks to make sure I’m crossing my T’s and dotting my I’s. But I feel like when you have Mike, as open as he is about communicating, making sure I know what I like, what’s at the top of my chart, maybe what I don’t feel great about, it’s been pretty easy to make sure that I’m doing that and I’m mastering what I’m good at. I feel great at the things we’ve put in that we’ve done. I’m saying (I) own it but want to own it more.”
The Cowboys will conclude their OTAs on June 15 before heading into training camp. They are set to kick off the 2023 season on Sept. 10 against the New York Giants.
