Dak Prescott states his agent, Cowboys are 'working' on extension ahead of season opener
Is time ticking on Dak Prescott and the Dallas Cowboys? Recent reports have stated the two sides need to have a contract extension agreed upon before Sunday’s season opener against Cleveland. Otherwise, Prescott could go into free agency next season and secure a record-breaking deal, likely from another team.
Just around 72 hours before kickoff, nothing has been finalized. But Prescott did push back on the idea of there being some kind of deadline. He knows the Cowboys and his agent, Todd France, are working on the extension, likely as he speaks to the media.
“I would say that they’re working,” Prescott said via Calvin Watkins of the Dallas Morning News. “I don’t know if that’s necessarily the timeline. I can’t say, oh, hell I’ll put a timeline on to Todd (France) and Stephen (Jones) if we don’t get this done, this or that. But I know they’re working.”
There is a chance Prescott will play the entire 2024 season with a contract for next season. Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network has speculated once the games begin on Sunday, the talks between France and the Jones family will cease. He believes getting it done would be at an “unbelievable cost” for the Cowboys.

“Here is what I would imagine, based on my knowledge, not reporting, just based on what I gather and what I know If they don’t do a deal by then [the start of the regular season], I can’t imagine he’s looking at a deal through the season. I can’t imagine he’s looking at a deal until March,” Rapoport said last Thursday.

“Then we’re talking free agency. And, as we’ve said many times, he’ll be the highest-profile free agent in NFL history. They could do a deal, but it has to come at an unbelievable cost, and I just don’t know if the Cowboys are going to get where they need to get.”
Three quarterbacks currently make an annual average of $55 million, all of who got deals this offseason — Joe Burrow, Jordan Love, and Trevor Lawrence. No matter who winds up signing Prescott, he is likely to well surpass that number, with an average of $60 million potentially being the floor.
Dallas has already been able to get one major contract finished this offseason, even if it took some time. Wide receiver CeeDee Lamb is locked down and set to spend at least next next four years with the Cowboys, another lengthy and drama-filled process.
Lamb certainly wants his quarterback to be next and according to the man himself, the discussions are ongoing just a few days ahead of the season opener.
