Dale Earnhardt Jr. responds to Jimmie Johnson comparing Austin Dillon move to Dale Earnhardt Sr.

Dale Earnhardt Jr. had an interesting response to Jimmie Johnson saying that Austin Dillon’s move at Richmond reminded him of Dale Earnhardt Sr. On the Dale Jr. Download podcast, Earnhardt Jr. said he had never seen his father take out two drivers to get a win.

“Dad was rough. He had a little spell, especially in that blue and yellow car where ’86/’87 he got pretty rough,” Earnhardt said. It was then revealed on the show that someone on social media looked at the last 20 finishes of Earnhardt Sr. wins, and there was only one finish where any significant contact was made.

“I think that back then it’s certainly a different time,” Earnhardt Jr. added. “I don’t know if I saw dad ever clean two of them out in the last corner.”

Dillon wrecked Joey Logano and Denny Hamlin to win the Cook Out 400. After the race, Johnson went to social media to write “Dale Sr vibes, while reposting NASCAR’s post of announcing Dillon’s victory. Fans had some interesting things to say about Johnson’s comparison.

One fan wrote: “Wow seeing the 3 car do that brought back memories of my childhood watching Sr do similar What an ending.

Another person wrote: “The difference is Dale was actually good. Austin is a below average driver at this level and had to wreck 2 people to get in to a playoff with s*** formatting.”

Earnhardt spoke to Dillon about the incident at Richmond on the podcast. Dillon said he was trying to get to Logano since he had a bad restart in overtime, but the Hamlin wreck just happened.

“Obviously, I’m doing everything I can to try and give my team a shot to win,” Dillon said. “I’m trying to get Joey loose. As I go in the corner, got a lot of speed, but actually I kind of had the car under control pretty good with a hard entry. I end up second lane middle when I get the car pointed to come back down the hill. On exit of Turn 4 at Richmond, the track naturally drives you to the wall when you’re running the yellow line. Denny’s on the lower line, I’ve got a really good Diamond kind of angle at the track at this point.

“So my vision is clear still, and I’m looking at the start/finish line. But my straightest point to the start/finish line is about mid-track, which isn’t optimal for the guy coming up the track. Denny, I think in his podcast, said that he didn’t even know I was there. When he came into my view, he’s carrying more speed than I am. If he clears me a little bit further, none of this happens. If he’s half a car length further back, he takes me to the wall with him and we crash at the wall.”
