Adam Schefter explains decision Jerry Jones must make on Mike McCarthy, reaction around NFL
NFL insider Adam Schefter told the crew on Get Up on Monday that the reaction from Sunday night’s Cowboys loss to the Packers was reminiscent of the Chargers’ collapse against the Raiders, which was the end of Brandon Staley’s tenure in Los Angeles. That’s bad news for Dallas head coach Mike McCarthy.
Schefter shared the latest he’s hearing from around the league on Monday after the shocking Wild Card round game in AT&T Stadium.
“Well everybody’s waiting to see what the fallout is,” Schefter said. “Today, this week, it could come whenever. Mike McCarthy was always going to be judged by how Dallas’s last game of the season ended. It didn’t work out well for Mike McCarthy, Dak Prescott, Dan Quinn, who’s a candidate for other coaching jobs, everyone associated with Dallas yesterday was charred.
“It reminded me of the Chargers-Raiders game, Chargers were getting blown out, when I got 20 texts from people across the league saying, ‘Brandon Staley is fired right?’ It was a replay yesterday with the Dallas Cowboys and Mike McCarthy. ‘Bill Belichick’s on Zillow, looking for homes in Dallas, Mike McCarthy’s out. They have to make a move.’ It reminded me so much of that Thursday night.”
Last week, there was talk of an extension for Mike McCarthy. Now, it’s looking more likely that Jerry Jones will send McCarthy packing with one year remaining on his deal. At this point, Schefter believes it could go either way.

“Now, it really is up to Jerry Jones, Stephen Jones, to decide how they want to handle it,” Schefter said. “McCarthy’s got one year left on his contract… He made Jason Garrett coach into the last year of his deal, not sure it worked out how anyone wanted. That’s a decision they have to make regarding the future of the Dallas Cowboys. As you know, as we’ve heard, people want blood.”
McCarthy addresses future with Dallas Cowboys
The Dallas Cowboys were humiliated and humbled to the highest degree on Sunday in their Wild Card matchup against the Green Bay Packers. The game wasn’t remotely close and whatever the Packers wanted to do on offense, they did.
With just over 10 minutes remaining in the game, Green Bay built their lead to 48-16, ensuring yet another humiliating playoff exit for the Cowboys. Following the 48-32 loss, Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy addressed his future and the blowout loss to the Packers.
“I don’t think anyone saw this coming. We didn’t get it done in any of the phases,” McCarthy said. When he was asked about his future, the Cowboys head coach said he hadn’t thought about it. “I think the biggest thing is we’re disappointed….I haven’t thought past the outcome of this game.”
