Dallas Cowboys and Kansas City Chiefs have drawn highest ratings this NFL season
It’s the Cowboys versus Chiefs for NFL TV viewership supremacy. Audiences are tuning in for both America’s Team and the defending Super Bowl champs, making the two teams the top draw in the league.
The Cowboys have played in either the No. 1 or No. 2 highest rated games in six of the league’s nine weeks. Meanwhile, the Chiefs have been involved in the highest-rated game of the week four times. Of course, folks want to watch Kansas City since the Chiefs are aiming for a second straight Super Bowl. And, the Chiefs also have the added draw of pop superstar Taylor Swift, who likes to watch her boyfriend, Travis Kelce, in a private suite at Arrowhead Stadium.
A week ago, the Cowboys, along with the Eagles, played before the largest TV audience so far this season when more than 27.1 million watched one of the most entertaining games of the year. The Eagles won, 28-23, but not before Darius Slay tackled CeeDee Lamb at the Philly 5-yard line on the game’s final play. For context, the Texas Rangers, which play right next to the Cowboys during MLB season, averaged about 9.1 million viewers a game when they won their first World Series title last month.
Meanwhile, the Chiefs played early last Sunday morning, KC time, against the Dolphins from Frankfurt,, Germany. The game drew 9.2 million, with another 500,000 streaming the game. That looks like a benign number. But given that you could only watch the game on NFL Network or on its streaming service, the audience was a big one. It was the biggest to watch a Sunday morning game in eight years and the largest international audience ever for an NFL game.
Chiefs plus Super Bowl plus Taylor Swift = winning TV
Kansas City also pulled big numbers in the season opener, with 24.33 million turning in to see the Lions upset the Chiefs. Then there was the game three matchup against the sort-of hapless Bears. The game, which the Chiefs won 41-10, attracted a TV audience of 24.33 million. We’re calling that the Swift impact. The superstar showed up, unannounced to the masses, to watch Kelce. Cameras located her sitting next to Donna Kelce, Travis’ mom, in a private suite. There was a bump in viewers from teenage girls as Kelce saw a 400 percent spike in his jersey sales.

Swift was there at MetLife Stadium to watch the Chiefs-Jets the next week. And 24.83 million viewed the game. Swift also brought several of her high-profile friends, including Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman, so the camera cutaways were fun.
The Chiefs stayed popular with TV audiences. By week seven, the Chiefs-Chargers managed 24,28 million. Taylor was there in person, too.
The Cowboys return to AT&T Stadium, Sunday, for am NFC East matchup against the Giants. The Chiefs are off. Kelce is in Argentina, helping Swift kick off the South American leg of her Eras Tour. Expect the Swifties to continue following the Chiefs.
