After suffering a calf injury in the Dallas Cowboys’ Week 1 game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, wide receiver Michael Gallup is finally making his way back onto the field and is expected to be activated to the team’s 53-man roster this week heading into Sunday’s game against the Atlanta Falcons.

The return of Gallup – a fourth-year NFL player out of Colorado State – has plenty of people excited, including fellow Cowboys wide receiver CeeDee Lamb.

“Very excited,” Lamb said of Gallup’s return, as posted in a tweet from Jon Machota of The Athletic. “A lot of people know what MG can do, and if you don’t, you’ll find out real soon. The guy is a playmaker, phenomenal teammate. Can’t wait for him to touch the endzone a couple times here soon.”

In Gallup’s first game of the season he had made four catches for 36 yards prior to suffering his calf injury in the third quarter. After being sidelined for the last seven games, Gallup became a full participant at practice this week and is expected to play Sunday. There was a chance that he could’ve played last week against the Denver Broncos, but the team instead left him on the injured reserve for another week.

Gallup was a big part of the Cowboys’ offense during his first three seasons in 2018, 2019 and 2020. After recording 33 receptions for 507 yards and two touchdowns as a rookie, Gallup had a breakout 2019 campaign – catching 66 passes for 1,107 yards and six touchdowns. He was again a big weapon last year, putting up 843 yards and five touchdowns with 59 receptions.

Before being selected in the third round of the 2018 NFL Draft, Gallup put up impressive numbers at Colorado State – leaving the school with 2,690 yards and 21 touchdowns in just two seasons after transferring from Butler Community College. He received All-Mountain West Conference honors in both seasons at CSU and was a second-team All-American in 2017.

Gallup played four sports at Monroe Area High School in Georgia and was both a wide receiver and running back on the football field during his senior season. For his final year of prep ball, Gallup tallied 28 catches for 637 and 10 touchdowns, while rushing for 484 yards and seven touchdowns on 37 carries.

Even without Gallup, the Dallas Cowboys’ offense has been successful throughout the 2021 season as offensive coordinator Kellen Moore’s unit leads the NFL with 434.3 yards per game. While quarterback Dak Prescott leads the way with 2,045 passing yards and 18 touchdowns, Lamb and Amari Cooper have been the team’s leading receivers with a combined 1,164 yards and nine scores.
