The coaching carousel continues to spin in Dallas while the Cowboys search for their next head coach. During an appearance on The Pat McAfee Show on Tuesday, ESPN’s Adam Schefter proposed that former Cowboys tight end Jason Witten could be in the running for the coveted position.

“I think Jason Witten would be possible,” Schefter said. “I put him in the possibility category, like I put [Deion Sanders] in the possibility category, and we’re all waiting to see what Jerry [Jones] decides to do. I’m not telling you that he’s going to be the head coach, but I definitely would not dismiss Jason Witten from this conversation.”

Witten spent 16 seasons with the Dallas Cowboys during his NFL career. He is the franchise’s career receiving leader, boasting 1,215 receptions for 12,977 yards and 72 touchdowns during his time with the organization.

During his career, Witten was a two-time First-Team All-Pro, 11-time Pro Bowl selection and the 2012 Walter Payton Man of the Year. Additionally, Witten was inducted into the Texas Sports Hall of Fame in 2019.

Since retiring in 2020, Witten has been the head coach Texas’ Liberty Christian School, leading the program to back-to-back state championships.

While it may seem drastic to give a high school head coach the reins of the Dallas Cowboys, Schefter believes Witten’s personality could make him an excellent fit for the organization.

“The guy he is, because of the mind he has, because of the player he was, because of all those things, which is exactly all the traits that would make him, again, a possibility here,” Schefter said.

“I think everybody has seen what Dan Campbell has done in Detroit, and the culture he’s brought there, and the impact he’s had on the roster in the city, I think people are looking for that type of thing. I’m just telling you a couple people said that’s the kind of impact they think Jason Witten could have.”

Schefter’s comparison of Jason Witten to Dan Campbell could excite Cowboys fans. Campbell was also a former player of the organization he took over. While the Lions continued to struggle in his first season, they quickly saw growth and are one of the best teams in the NFL this season.

Schefter said that there are insiders who seem to believe that Campbell could create similar results in Dallas. Only time will tell who the next leader of the Cowboys will be, but fans should keep their eye on Jason Witten, according to Schefter.
