The Dallas Cowboys are looking into a familiar face but also a division rival for their open head coaching role. An interview with Philadelphia offensive coordinator Kellen Moore is set to take place before the Eagles face the Rams on Sunday. Moore spent five seasons in Dallas before being fired in 2022.

NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport says Moore is somebody to seriously watch moving forward in the Cowboys’ search. A lot of recent buzz has gone to Colorado‘s Deion Sanders and rightfully so. But Rapoport labels Moore is just as serious of a candidate.

“This is someone who is considered to be a top candidate for the Dallas Cowboys,” Rapoport said of Moore. “I’m not saying the top candidate. Just certainly someone to watch and discuss and consider moving forward.”

A lot of attention goes to Moore’s coaching days with the Cowboys. He was first the quarterbacks coach before taking over as offensive coordinator in Jason Garrett‘s final season in charge. Mike McCarthy retained Moore but took over playcalling duties for the 2023 season while Moore went to Los Angeles with the Chargers.

Moore spent the final three years of his playing career with Dallas, though. He was on the roster when Dak Prescott was drafted and may have even started during the 2016 season had it not been for an injury. Prescott and Moore got two years together as players before the latter transitioned into coaching.

Plenty of familiarity is there between Moore, the Cowboys, and the offensive players already in the building. Rapoport even believes an interview would not lead to any real new information.

“It’s not just that they know him ‘He’s been an assistant there.’ He grew up in the franchise, he was a backup quarterback to Tony Romo and then got injured and then somebody named Dak Prescott took over and the rest is history,” Rapoport said. “Dak knows him well, they have a great relationship. So yes, they are going to interview him… But it’s not like they really need to interview him.

“They’ve seen him up close, they know how he works, they know what kind of coordinator he would be, they believe they know what kind of head coach he is going to be if he gets the opportunity.”
