Cowboys CB Trevon Diggs undergoes successful ACL surgery, set for 2024 return
After suffering from a torn ACL at a team practice in September, NFL Insider Adam Schefter reported that Dallas Cowboys cornerback Trevon Diggs underwent a successful procedure on his knee Tuesday.
Schefter also added that doctors discovered great news, as all of Diggs’ other knee ligaments were intact, which poises him for a to return to the field in the 2024 season.
Cowboys Executive Vice President Stephen Jones explained that Diggs took an awkward step while trying to make a play on the ball during one-on-ones in practice, torquing his knee the wrong way resulting in his ACL tear.
Diggs led the entire NFL in interceptions in the 2021 season where he also earned a First-Team All-Pro selection. The two-time Pro Bowler only appeared in two games this season before suffering his injury, recording three tackles along with an interception and three defended passes versus the New York Jets and New York Giants.
This offseason in July Diggs signed a five-year, $97 million contract extension with Dallas worth up to $104 million in potential bonuses, making him the fifth highest-paid cornerback in the NFL.
Dallas also acquired former Defensive Player of the Year Stephon Gilmore this offseason via trade to play opposite Diggs this year at the cornerback position, but unfortunately, the tandem only joined forces twice this season.

Some were concerned about the state of the Dallas secondary this season following Diggs’ injury, but the unit has impressed. Cornerback DaRon Bland filled in for Diggs at the cornerback spot and has excelled with three interceptions on the season, as the Cowboys boast the league’s third-best past defense allowing just 177 yards through the air per game.
But despite their success, there’s no doubt the Cowboys will be looking forward to their star cornerback returning to the lineup and on their star studded defense next season.
Trevon Diggs pens message following ACL tear at Cowboys practice
Just a few hours following the news, Diggs penned a message on Twitter (X). He thanked everyone for checking in on him, with this being the first significant injury of his NFL career. Diggs believes he will be back and “better” than before — hopefully for the beginning of the 2024 season.
“Thank you for all the prayers and I appreciate everyone for checking on me! This is just God’s Plan,” Diggs said. “I will be back and better!”
