Dallas Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy worried some this offseason with his comments about how he planned to change the offense following the departure of Kellen Moore. Moore had the offense firing with Dak Prescott, even if it couldn’t get them over the 49ers-shaped hump two years in a row.

Prescott assured fans this week that McCarthy’s “Texas Coast” offense will have “more plays” and that he and his receivers will be on the same page more this year thanks to the changes.

“This is truly only the second system I’ve been in,” Prescott said, via DallasCowboys.com. “You could say I’ve had three different coordinators in my time, but from (Scott) Linehan to Kellen, there wasn’t a lot of changeover. There were different ways to get to plays, kind of a different approach about it. This change from Kellen to McCarthy, there’s definitely more plays added.”

“There are things [McCarthy] has brought from his past, West Coast-type things,” he added. “Guys are much further along [than in 2018], and I am as well. That’s credit to Coach [McCarthy], that’s credit to [Brian Schottenheimer], just installing the plays with a lot of details and making sure everybody understands the purpose of the play, the details of the play and their role within that.”

Jerry Jones describes how new offense will be ‘Dak-friendly’

Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones is undoubtedly carefully observing how the first few months of play-caller McCarthy is going. He described his interpretation of the head coach’s changes to the offense as “Dak-friendly.”

“It’s Dak-friendly,” Jones said on 96.7 The Ticket last week, via Jon Machota. “He’s going to have an offensive line that is going to be able to protect him better, their spacing is narrower, which is conducive to protection… More opportunities to dump the ball off to the backs. He’s going to have less to do before the snap, and less to read after the snap.

“The receivers are going to be less dependent upon reading the d-back and Dak reading the d-back. It’s going to be more about being at a spot where they should be. The [combination] of all of it, and all of it is adjustments, not dramatic changes. When you combine it all then I’m confident that we’re going to be excited about how it protects Dak and how it actually helps efficiency for Dak.”

If Prescott can remain aggressive without sacrificing the safety of the football, the Cowboys offense has the potential to surpass the very high marks they reached last season. With the defense also improving, it’s no wonder why Jones feels 2023 could be the year Dallas finally breaks through.
