The Dallas Cowboys are expected to interview their current offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer for their head coaching vacancy, per Ian Rapoport of NFL Network.

Schottenheimer will become the fourth coach to interview, joining former New York Jets head coach Robert Saleh, Philadelphia Eagles offensive coordinator Kellen Moore and Seattle Seahawks assistant head coach Leslie Frazier. The Cowboys are looking to replace Mike McCarthy, who mutually parted ways with the Cowboys last week.

Schottenheimer, 51, has been a longtime offensive coordinator in both the NFL and at the collegiate level. He joined the Cowboys’ staff as a coaching analyst in 2022 and McCarthy promoted him to offensive coordinator ahead of the 2023 season after parting ways with Moore. McCarthy called plays in both seasons with Schottenheimer as his offensive coordinator.

But Schottenheimer obviously is familiar with the Cowboys’ culture and a relationship with team owner Jerry Jones. And according to the latest odds at DraftKings, Schottenheimer leads the way at -250 to land the head coaching job.

Before his current stint in Dallas, Schottenheimer had stops with the Los Angeles Rams (1997, 2012-14), Kansas City Chiefs (1998), Syracuse (1999), USC (2000), Washington Commanders (2001), Los Angeles Chargers (2002-05), New York Jets (2006-11), Georgia (2015), Indianapolis Colts (2016-17), Seattle Seahawks (2018-20) and Jacksonville Jaguars (2021).

Brian Schottenheimer emerges as candidate for Cowboys’ head coaching job

ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter first mentioned Schottenheimer as a candidate during a Monday appearance on “The Pat McAfee Show.”

“I think the one guy who knows is Jerry Jones, and Jerry Jones is certainly apt to change his mind from day to day,” Schefter said. “Again, I think the candidates have been out there so far. I think Brian Schottenheimer’s the favorite in Las Vegas here. Now, that doesn’t mean that Brian Schottenheimer isn’t going to be the head coach at some point in time. Again, we never rule out anything.

“But to the best of my knowledge he hasn’t interviewed for the job and Dallas hasn’t approached him about being the head coach.”
