The Dallas Cowboys are adding to their offensive coaching staff, hiring Derrick Foster as their new running backs coach, according to Nick Harris of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.
“The Dallas Cowboys are hiring Derrick Foster as their new RBs coach, multiple sources tell [the Fort Worth Star-Telegram]. Foster, 38, served the same role for the New Orleans Saints in 2024 and for the Los Angeles Chargers from 2021-2023, overseeing Austin Ekeler’s rise,” Harris posted on X. “An important hire for Schottenheimer going into a critical 2025 draft cycle at the running back position.”
As Harris alluded to, it’s a solid hire for Brian Schottenheimer and company, as the Cowboys continue to reshape their coaching staff. Their running game was an issue in 2024, and they’re hoping the addition of Foster, along with some added talent through free agency and the NFL Draft, will help turn it into a strength.
Moving forward, Foster will be joining the Cowboys after they made it official that Klayton Adams will be their next offensive coordinator. He interviewed twice for the role under Schottenheimer, after he spent the last two years as the Arizona Cardinals’ offensive line coach after joining the franchise under Jonathan Gannon.
He was considered the favorite for the Cowboys’ OC opening after interviewing in-person earlier last week, and he’ll now get the job under Schottenheimer, who will call plays as head coach.

All told, the Cowboys now have both coordinators in place, and they’re continuing to build out their staff this offseason. The franchise quickly moved to hire former Chicago Bears coach Matt Eberflus as defensive coordinator, and Schottenheimer has his offensive coordinator, as well.
Moreover, Adams previously spent time with the Indianapolis Colts as assistant offensive line coach from 2019-20 and as tight ends coach from 2021-22 before heading to Arizona. Eberflus was also on the Colts’ staff from 2018-21 when he left to become the Bears’ head coach.
Adams previously held the title of offensive coordinator in 2018 when he split duties at Colorado while also working as the Buffaloes’ offensive line coach. After that season, the Colts hired him for his first NFL coaching opportunity.
2025 will be an important crusade for the Dallas Cowboys, and Brian Schottenheimer is making it his mission to build a strong staff. He’s hoping the additions of coaches like Klayton Adams and Derrick Foster will be part of it as he takes over the franchise for the first time this season.
