Dallas Cowboys: Injury updates on Trevon Diggs, Tyron Smith
The Dallas Cowboys defeated the Minnesota Vikings in exhilarating fashion last night. However, two of their stars left the game with injury concerns — cornerback Trevon Diggs and offensive tackle Tyron Smith.
This morning, NFL insider Ian Rapoport provided an update on the Cowboys star players.
“Cowboys star CB Trevon Diggs should be fine from his ankle injury yesterday, while LT Tyron Smith will undergo tests today on his sprained ankle, source said,” tweeted Rapoport. “A little more concern for Smith, but tests will determine how significant it is.”
First, Diggs suffered his injury on one of the final plays of the game. As the Vikings attempted to drive for a game-winning touchdown, Diggs banged his ankle against the ankle of Vikings wide receiver K.J. Osborn. Immediately, Diggs was looked at by trainers, seemingly in great amounts of pain.
Luckily, it seems as if Diggs will be fine moving forward. Banging your ankle against anything hurts in the moment, but it doesn’t seem to be anything more than fleeting pain for the Cowboys defensive back.
As for Smith, his injury is a tad more serious. The Cowboys left tackle has been bitten by the injury bug, as there was trepidation originally regarding his status due to a neck injury. Now, a sprained ankle is bothering the former USC Trojans offensive lineman.
As one of the best tackles in the league, Smith has been a rock for the Cowboys. Whether it’s Cooper Rush or Dak Prescott at quarterback, either benefit from Smith protecting their blindside.
More on Trevon Diggs
On Sunday night, Trevon Diggs had the opportunity to set a new NFL record. He’s currently tied with Hall of Famer Rod Woodson with six consecutive games with an interception to start the season. The seventh game with a pick would’ve set him above all others but the Cowboys are probably just relieved that his injury appears to be minor.

The former Alabama Crimson Tide national champion spent the bye week and last week recovering from a separate ankle injury after the win versus New England. The corner played limited in practice on Wednesday and Thursday of last week before going full-go on Friday.
Diggs, in his second year in the NFL with the Dallas Cowboys, has seven interceptions on the season. That stat leads the NFL’s other top defenders handily. Bengals linebacker Logan Wilson and Titans safety Kevin Byard trail with four picks each.
Thanks, in part, to Trevon Diggs, the Dallas Cowboys are tied for the lead in the NFL in interceptions after seven games with 11. The New Orleans Saints, L.A. Rams and Buffalo Bills also have 11.
The Dallas Cowboys notched win No. 6 of the 2021 season on Sunday night 20-16 over the Minnesota Vikings. Diggs had one tackle in the game before taking a hit to the ankle.
