There has been speculation for months that former Cowboys star tight end Jason Witten could join the Dallas coaching staff, and Witten was even mentioned as a potential head coaching candidate for the Cowboys at one point.

However, it now doesn’t appear as though he will be on staff with the Cowboys in 2025 under new head coach Brian Schottenheimer.

Cowboys reporter Jon Machota posted on Twitter Monday afternoon that after talking with Jerry Jones: “It doesn’t sound like Jason Witten will be on the coaching staff.”

At the moment, Jason Witten’s only coaching experience is as the head coach at Liberty Christian School (Argyle, Texas). However, Jerry Jones has said in the past that he believes Jason Witten has a bright future in coaching.

Back in November, Jerry Jones compared Jason Witten to current Lions head coach Dan Campbell, who is widely regarded as one of the best coaches in the NFL.

“Yes. Without hesitation. Yes,” Jones said, regarding whether he thinks Witten could one day be an NFL coach, via 105.3 The FAN per The Athletic’s Jon Machota. “He has something that you can’t draw up. He reminds me a lot of our other tight end who is head coach up there in Detroit right now (Campbell).

“Jason is very sophisticated when it comes to understanding football and all the nuances. But more important than anything, he really does understand the physical and the mentality of being physical and that part of it. Without a question, he could become (an NFL coach). He has extraordinary work ethic. … He can be a top coach.”

While Jones expects Jason Witten to be a successful NFL coach down the line, it doesn’t seem as though he was a serious candidate for the Cowboys head coaching job, and it appears unlikely that he will be on staff at all with the Cowboys.

Jerry Jones defends hiring Brian Schottenheimer as Cowboys coach

Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones held a press conference on Monday to introduce Brian Schottenheimer as the Cowboys head coach.

During the press conference, Jerry Jones defended his decision to promote Schottenheimer from offensive coordinator to head coach. He added that he is being criticized for staying in his comfort zone, when in reality he is taking a big risk.

“Now I get my proverbial ass kicked over needing people in my comfort zone. Without this thing being about me in any way, if you don’t think I can’t operate out of my comfort zone, you’re so wrong, it’s unbelievable,” Jerry Jones said. “This is as big a risk as you could take, as big a risk as you could take. No head coaching experience.”
