Dallas Cowboys lose rookie linebacker DeMarvion Overshown to ACL tear
The Dallas Cowboys have reportedly confirmed that rookie linebacker DeMarvion Overshown tore his ACL in Saturday night’s game versus the Seattle Seahawks. Due to the injury to his left knee, Overshown will miss the remainder of his rookie season. Dallas Morning News reporter Michael Gehlken first reported the news acquired via a source on Sunday.
The injury occurred with just under eight minutes remaining in the first quarter, when Overshown made a tackle on Seahawks rookie tailback Zach Charbonnet. Overshown appeared to be fine initially, before grabbing his left knee in pain. He was able to walk off the field on his own power, eventually being carted off to the locker room. He had three tackles before he had to exit the game.
Head coach Mike McCarthy addressed Overshown’s injury after the game.
“You just say your prayers and hopefully the imaging points in the right direction. He’s had an incredible camp,” McCarthy said, via Clarence Hill Jr. of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. “We talked about him seems like almost every other day. I just hope he’s okay.”
McCarthy added the team had big plans for Overshown in his rookie season, given the promise he’s shown throughout training camp and the preseason.
“Absolutely. He was climbing. He was climbing the charts,” McCarthy said. “… Showed up right away in the offseason program, just his ability to fly around. Really has excellent command. So just hopeful. See how tomorrow goes.”
Overshown already leading Cowboys as rookie
Overshown, who grew up just east of Dallas in Arp, Texas, was one of the standouts in the Cowboys’ preseason opener against the Jacksonville Jaguars last Saturday. He led the team huddle after warmups and recorded six combined tackles at halftime to pace all Dallas defenders.

Speaking with the media after the game, Overshown talked about realizing the dream of playing for the team he grew up watching.
“I did [have to settle my emotions,” Overshown said. “Definitely. Putting the jersey on and putting my armbands on my sleeve and realizing I was about to do this for the Dallas Cowboys. A lot of people dream about it. A lot of people say, ‘Man, I wanna do that.’
“I’m part of that one percent that gets the chance to do that. Before the game, I took five deep breaths and soaked it in. I wouldn’t wanna be [any]where else. I’m glad to be here. I’m looking forward to the rest of the year.”
Dallas drafted Overshown with the No. 90 overall selection in the third round of the 2023 NFL Draft.
At Texas, Overshown played for five seasons. He played in 50 games, starting in 33. He was also a first-team All-Big 12 selection in 2022. That season, he had 96 total tackles, 10 tackles for loss, and four sacks. Over the course of his entire career, he had 30.5 tackles for loss and nine sacks.
