Dallas Cowboys offensive lineman leaves game with injury

The Dallas Cowboys lost a starting offensive lineman to injury during the second quarter of Sunday’s game with the Minnesota Vikings. Tackle Tyron Smith was seen on the sideline not wearing a helmet after being evaluated by the medical team. Smith entered the game already on the Cowboys’ injury report with an ankle injury.

“Cowboys LT Tyron Smith is dealing with an injury of some sort on sideline,” stated the Dallas Morning News’ Michael Gehlken. “Not wearing a helmet after being evaluated after offense’s last possession. Smith entered game with ankle issue. Unclear if this is related.”

Shortly after the news that Smith was seen on the sidelines unable to enter the game, Ty Nsekhe was substituted into the game at left tackle. Smith’s night appeared to be over for the Cowboys, and will likely undergo further examination of his ankle.

Smith was limited in practice during the week leading up to the game, and was considered questionable by the end of the week. Despite the concerns, he was ruled active for the game with the Vikings and started.

Smith struggling to return from injury

Smith recently was sent for an MRI on his neck earlier this month, leaving many Cowboys fans holding their breath. Last season, the star offensive tackle missed 14 games with the injury. Luckily, Smith has been healthy so far this season. He used a well-timed bye week to recharge for the second half of the season.

During Dallas’ bye week, Cowboys executive Stephen Jones provided an update on Smith’s play and health.

“He was outstanding,” Jones told 105.3FM the Fan of Smith’s performance against the Patriots. “He had no issues in the game, no setbacks, and feels better than he’s felt in years in terms of how he feels physically. And, of course, as we all see, when he’s feeling good, he’s the best in the business in our mind and playing at a real high level.”

Tyron Smith has been his usual outstanding self — allowing only one sack and three hurries on Prescott this season. The offensive tackle appeared to be back in prime form, and the Cowboys believed there would be no issues going forward. Unfortunately, Smith’s ankle appears to continue bothering him as he left the game before the half.
