After more offensive comments in numerous emails from Jon Gruden surfaced on Monday night, the now former Las Vegas Raiders head coach has resigned from his position. The emails from Gruden included racist, misogynistic, and homophobic language. Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has commented on Gruden’s resignation and spoke about what it means for the NFL.

“I know these people,” Jones said via Cowboys reporter Michael Gehlken. “I know everybody that you’ve been reading about. They’re outstanding proponents of our game. They have represented this game in many cases beautifully. And certainly, we all continue to recognize what a spotlight you’re in and the way we should express ourselves. All of that comes to mind.”

Jones wouldn’t say whether or not he thought Gruden deserved to lose his job

While Jones wouldn’t comment one way or another on whether or not he though Gruden should have lost his job. Jones said that everyone is accountable for their own actions.

“I don’t have anything I want to express here, one way or the other,” Jones said. From the standpoint of contribution, I know that we are all accountable to even a, if you will, a fleeting or minor part of our actions. We all are accountable to those. But that’s about all I want to comment on it. We are talking about people here and even the ones that some of the comments were directed about. Those have been outstanding people in the NFL.”

Jones went on to say that Gruden’s situation has helped him become more aware of how different times are now than they were 30 years ago. Jones specifically noted the drastic changes in technology.

“Daylight and dark,” Jones said. “Daylight and dark. Just the technology alone but certainly because of the expectations. Those have dramatically changed. But they were changing from where they were 30 years earlier, 30 years ago. We just have to keep our eyes open. The incidents that get portrayed aren’t necessarily a reflection of the individual or a reflection of his life, but they certainly are impactful.

“You are accountable for them. That’s about all I can say. It’s almost like the quote, just looking at an incident and trying to describe it rather than having an opinion on it. The opinion is just a wish that we could have all things that we’re discussing be complete positives, but that’s not life.”
