Plenty of players across the National Football League dread cut day. For many players on the bubble of making a roster, it’s a stressful experience. And there were several players on the Dallas Cowboys squad on Wednesday evening, that thankfully, survived roster cut day. They were named to the practice squad.

And while it’s certainly different from being on the active 53-man roster, earning a spot on the practice squad is a tremendous opportunity for many.

On Wednesday evening, Dallas released the list of players named to their practice squad.

A familiar face on the list for Cowboys fans will be running back Malik Davis. He’s been with the franchise since 2022, rushing 38 times for 161 yards and a touchdown in the 2022 season. In 2023, he only played in one game. Tight end Princeton Fant has bounced off and on the Cowboys’ practice squad for the past year.

One of the more notable names the Cowboys signed was wide receiver Kelvin Harmon, a 6-2, 215-pound receiver out of NC State. In 2019 with the Washington Commanders, Harmon hauled in 30 catches for 365 yards.

In the 2024 preseason, Harmon hauled in five catches for 70 yards for the Cowboys. He impressed them enough to land a spot on their practice squad. Harmon was dominant during his final two years with the NC State Wolfpack in 2017 and 2018. His sophomore season (2017), he hauled in 69 catches for 1,017 yards and four touchdowns.

That made him the first receiver at the school to haul in over 1,000 yards receiving since 2003. As a junior (2018), Harmon finished with 81 catches for 1,186 receiving yards and seven touchdowns. In 2017 he brought home second-team All-ACC honors and in 2018 he brought home first-team All-ACC honors. He flashed tremendous potential coming out of college, so it’ll be interesting to see what he does with his second opportunity in the NFL.

Before joining the Cowboys, Harmon spent time with the DC Defenders of the UFL in 2024. He was also a practice squad member of the Philadelphia Stars of the USFL in 2023.

Another notable name the Cowboys signed was Carl Lawson, a former fourth round pick in the 2017 NFL Draft. Lawson played his college football with the Auburn Tigers, earning first team All-American honors in 2016. He’s put up some pretty good production in his NFL career thus far, but has battled injuries as of late. In 74 games played, Lawson has racked up 119 total tackles, 27 sacks, and three forced fumbles. In 2022 with the New York Jets, Lawson tallied seven sacks in 17 games, the most he’s played in his career thus far.

In 2021 when he was on the Jets, Lawson suffered a ruptured Achilles tendon in his left leg, effectively ending his 2021 season. In joining the Cowboys, he joins another former New York Jet, running back Dalvin Cook.
