Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott discovered a new favorite target at the tight end position last season in Dalton Schultz. His role is only expected to grow but prior to Tuesday, a contract dispute was holding back Schultz from being at minicamp. After he returned, Prescott was happy to see his guy back at The Star.

Prescott talked about how valuable Schultz is to Dallas, citing how big of a leadership role within the offense he has. As the tight end gets back into working with Prescott and company, he will have the opportunity to become a top-paid tight end as well.

“I mean, it’s huge,” Prescott said. “Obviously, what he means to this team, his leadership. What the role he stepped into to be the guy at tight end. To be a leader of this offense and to make plays. He’s a guy that I can count on, that I can trust, and that’s just continued to grow. And it’s grown over these past few weeks.”

Schultz finished second on Dallas in receptions with 78, only behind wide receiver CeeDee Lamb. He had 808 yards and eight touchdowns as well. Offensive Kellen Moore was going to get Schultz more involved even before the loss of Amari Cooper but now, the tight end is as valuable as ever.

Dallas decided to use their franchise tag on Schultz but the current goal is to work out a long-term contract. Tight ends have already been paid this offseason across the league and Schultz is hoping to be the next to cash in.

Mike McCarthy ‘not worried’ about Dalton Schultz

Schultz is coming off a career year and wants a new contract to reflect his improvement. As of now, Dallas has opted to use their franchise tag on Schultz to keep him with the Cowboys for another year. But the emerging tight end wants longer than a one-year deal, which has led to contract disputes and Schultz missing optional practices as the summer ramps up.

However, the outside noise isn’t bothering Cowboys coach Mike McCarthy. He believes Schultz will be the same man on the field when the games begin. “I’m not worried about his commitment or what he’s done,” McCarthy said, according to an article from the Cowboys site.

Schultz “is in great shape,” he continued. “If he was standing here, he would tell you this is the strongest he’s ever been.” The tight end appears to be in world-class shape after posting a career year.
