Following the Cowboys’ preseason loss on Sunday, QB Dak Prescott gave an update on his health.

Per Prescott, his ankle is alright and, with that, he will return to practice for Dallas on Tuesday.

Prescott has been recently dealing with an ankle issue. As of Friday, he missed practice due to soreness that was deemed as “completely cautionary”. Still, it has been worth noting with the season, which is a significant one for him, quickly coming.

The reasoning for that importance for Prescott is due to his contract situation. He is on the final year of his deal with him earning $29 million this fall before entering free agency. As of now, he is one of a few key players that the franchise is negotiating with but, to this point, they’ve inked none to new deals. That could make this the last season for him in Dallas.

Prescott is one of the better quarterbacks in the league heading into his ninth season in the NFL. In 114 games with Dallas, he has completed 67% of his throws for an average of 3,682.4 yards a season to go with totals of 202 touchdowns and 74 interceptions at a ratio of 2.7 to 1.

Prescott is coming of the best year of his career in 2023. He threw for a career-high in completions and touchdowns with 4,516 yards, 36 scores, and nine picks on 69.5% completion. With that, he was an All-Pro, a Pro Bowler, and finished second in voting for MVP to Lamar Jackson.

Even so, Prescott has also had his shortcomings too for the Cowboys in the playoffs. They’ve still been unable to reach the NFC Championship, let alone a Super Bowl, in his near decade there amidst five playoff appearances with three ending in the divisional and two in the wildcard.

This is a pivotal year for the Cowboys’ franchise along with Prescott. That makes it all the more important, and even better to hear, that he’s going to be back this week after these precautions.

Jerry Jones states Prescott is ‘very special to deal with’ in negotiations

The Dallas Cowboys and Dak Prescott remain engaged in negotiations on a contract extension with the quarterback entering the final year of his current deal.

The two previously negotiated in 2020 and 2021 where they agreed to a four-year, $160 million deal. Prescott’s next contract could be well north of $50 million annually but the two sides haven’t agreed to anything yet.

Owner Jerry Jones, in speaking with Nick Harris of Cowboys.com in a sit-down interview, described those conversations with Prescott.

“Well, I think that Dak, as you would expect, is very pragmatic,” Jones said. “He’s thoughtful and does his business the same way with the same kind of intensity and professionalism as he does out on the football field. Now, as it turns out, they both are some of the same. It takes both to make it go. But Dak is, in my mind, very special to deal with. I’ve dealt over the last 35 years with a lot of agents, a lot of players and Dak’s one of the best.”
