The Dallas Cowboys are bringing back return specialist KaVontae Turpin for the next three seasons. According to Tom Pelissero and Jane Slater of the NFL Network, the Cowboys are finalizing a three-year, $18 million deal with Turnpin. The signing will make Turpin the NFL’s highest-paid special team’s player.

Turpin is coming off his best season in the NFL. The 28-year-old was named to the All-Pro First Team after tallying one punt return TD and one Kick return TD. Turpin also led the NFL in yards per kick return (33.5) and was named to his second Pro Bowl.

The Cowboys originally signed Turpin to a three-year contract in July 2022. During his first season in Dallas, the former TCU star was named to the Pro Bowl after posting 303 punt return yards and 508 kick return yards.

“I’m grateful man, thank the Lord,” Turpin said after learning he was named to his second Pro Bowl, per the Cowboys’ official website. “Two years out of my three years here, I’m just grateful to show my ability on special teams. I’m grateful.”

Before joining the Cowboys, KaVontae Turpin played in multiple pro football leagues, including the USFL. He played for the USFL’s New Jersey Generals in 2022 and was named the league’s MVP.

KaVontae Turpin set big individual goals for the 2024 season

“Competitive, I’m a little guy, 5’9, 150 pounds going out there and competing on a big level with the big guys,” Turpin said when asked what makes him stand out as a player. “I’m just competitive, I go out there and compete no matter what the circumstances.”

Before the 2024 season kicked off, Turpin talked about the goals he had for his contract year. “Going into year two of this offense, my year three, now it just feels like confidence,” he said, per the Cowboys’ official website. “I go out there and play fast and everything. They can put me in any position and I’ll just go in and play fast. I’m just glad I was able to do OTAs last year and this year. It helped me a lot to be the player that I am.”

The Cowboys also saw Turpin take strides as a wide receiver in 2024. In 17 games, Turpin caught 31 passes for 420 yards and two touchdowns. He also made an impact as a running back, rushing for 92 yards on 16 carries.
