Dallas Cowboys safety Jayron Kearse beats out Micah Parsons for No. 0 jersey
Following the NFL’s recent rules change for jerseys, the Dallas Cowboys have given the No. 0 to veteran safety Jayron Kearse. Kearse had to battle star edge rusher Micah Parsons for the number, but the team announced the change on Friday.
Swapping jersey numbers in the NFL means the player switching must buy back the inventory of jerseys. With that in mind, it’s understandable that Parsons didn’t end up switching from No. 11 to No. 0. The former Nittany Lion leads all Cowboys players in jersey sales. In fact, he was second in the league for jersey sales behind Bills quarterback Josh Allen.
Luckily, for any Cowboys fans who want to purchase a Kearse No. 27 jersey, they’re now on a sale at most retailers. The NFL’s fan shop and Fanatics both have perks that allow fans to swap jerseys within 90 days of purchase if a player moves teams. However, that probably wouldn’t apply for a player voluntarily switching numbers.
Kearse will be the first Cowboys player to ever wear the No. 0 since the NFL enacted the new rule this offseason. In 2022, the safety posted 77 tackles, an interception, two sacks, and 14 tackles for loss.
NFL owners approve proposal allowing players to wear No. 0
The NFL owners have approved a proposal that will allow players to wear the No. 0. The proposal was put forth by the Philadelphia Eagles. It is the second major change to roster numbers in the past three seasons after the NFL owners relaxed jersey number designations ahead of the 2021 season. A number of team executives gave their thoughts on the latest number rule change.

“I don’t think there was any discussion, and we voted,” Falcons president/competition committee co-chair Rich McKay said.
“This is one thing that could help us in that challenge, because we do have some players that tend to like the single digit,” McKay said. “Numbers are more problematic than they’ve ever been, so this one had very little pushback.”
