The Dallas Cowboys will have a new running back for the 2025 season, as they are adding Javonte Williams to the roster. According to Tom Pelissero of the NFL Network, the former Denver Broncos running back is signing a one-year, $3 million contract with the Cowboys. Pelissero added that Williams could get as much as $3.5 million with incentives.

“Javonte Williams had one of the best games of his career at AT&T Stadium, rushing 17 times for a career-high 111 yards as a rookie in a 30-16 win in 2021,” Pelissero wrote in a follow-up post. “Now, he’s headed to Dallas full-time.

The Broncos selected Williams in the second round of the 2021 draft. The performance against the Cowboys in 2021 led to a productive rookie season for Williams, rushing for a career-best 903 yards and four touchdowns in 17 games.

Looking at Javonte Williams’ career in Denver

Javonte Williams played in just four games in 2022 due to him tearing his ACL, LCL and posterolateral corner. He came back in 2023 and rushed for 774 yards and three touchdowns on 217 carries. Last year, the former North Carolina star rushed for 513 yards and four touchdowns on 139 carries.

“I was watching his college tape in the draft room one day, and he walked in,” Broncos head coach Sean Payton said last July, per the team’s official website. “And again, he was injured last season, so this was a tough offseason. This time of the year, we were watching all the runs. I’m asking him questions, and I said, ‘This is the back I want. What’d you weigh here?'”

In January, Williams told Chris Tomasson of the Denver Gazette about wanting to re-sign with the Broncos. “I’d love to be in Denver (next season),’’ he said. “I love the coaches. I love the city, my teammates. I love everything about it, but I understand it’s a business, and however it shakes out, I just got to do what I got to do.”

Javonte Williams has a chance to be the Cowboys’ top running back for the 2025 season. Last year, Rico Dowdle was Dallas’ starting running back last season and rushed for over 1,000 yards. He is now a free agent.
