The Dallas Cowboys are set to scoop up a former first-round NFL Draft pick via a trade. The Buffalo Bills are dealing cornerback Kaiir Elam.

NFL insider Josina Anderson first reported news of the expected trade on Wednesday. She did not include any potential terms.

Shortly after Anderson’s report broke, Buffalo confirmed details of the trade. Buffalo will receive a fifth- (2025) and future seventh-round pick (2026) in exchange for Elam and a sixth-round pick (2025).

Kaiir Elam has spent the first three years of his career in Buffalo after the Bills selected him with the No. 23 overall pick in the 2022 NFL Draft. He’s had mixed results.

After playing in 13 games as a rookie in 2022, Elam racked up 41 tackles and two interceptions, as well as four passes defended. He looked well on his way to becoming a bigger contributor.

Then he played in just three games in 2023, his second season in the league. Kaiir Elam spent a large chunk of the season on the injured reserve.

In 2024, Elam played in 13 games again, recording 26 tackles and two passes defended. However, as the postseason came around, he was used essentially only as an emergency backup as other players left the lineup due to injury.

How much the Cowboys can get out of him remains to be seen. Kaiir Elam doesn’t have elite speed but is a physical presence near the line of scrimmage.

Dallas adds punter Bryan Anger

In addition to the expected Kaiir Elam addition, Dallas has also made some other moves in free agency. One materialized on Tuesday.

According to ESPN’s Todd Archer, the Dallas Cowboys have agreed to a contract with punter Bryan Anger. The deal will span two years, keeping the key piece to the special teams unit in Dallas despite a new coaching staff coming in.

“The Cowboys will have their special teams battery together for another year with punter Bryan Anger agreeing to a two-year deal, per source,” Archer said via X. “Anger has averaged 49 yards per punt in four years with the Cowboys and has been named to the Pro Bowl twice.”

Anger has spent the last four seasons in Dallas and been one of the league’s best. Twice has he been named second-team All-Pro, most recently in 2023 when a Pro Bowl selection also occurred. As Archer mentioned, Anger is averaging 49 yards per punt with the Cowboys and hits 38.5% inside the 20-yard line.
