Dallas Cowboys trade Peyton Hendershot to Kansas City Chiefs for seventh-round pick
The Dallas Cowboys are trading tight end Peyton Hendershot to the Kansas City Chiefs before the start of the 2024 NFL season. According to Tom Pelissero of the NFL Network, the Chiefs are acquiring Hendershot for a 2026 conditional seven-round draft pick. The Cowboys were planning to cut the former Indiana football star who appeared in 25 games in Dallas.
Hendershot signed with the Cowboys as an undrafted free agent in 2022. In his career, Hendershot caught 15 passes for 141 yards and two touchdowns. Hendershot played in all 17 games in 2022 but missed half the 2023 season due to an ankle injury.
During his time at Indiana, Hendershot was selected to the All-Big Ten Third Team in 2021 after catching 46 passes for 543 yards and four touchdowns in 12 games. He was projected to be a seventh-round pick or priority free agent ahead of the 2022 NFL Draft.
Why the Cowboys traded Peyton Hendershot
“Former basketball standout with footwork and athleticism for more complex route-running on the first two levels,” NFL analyst Lance Zierlein wrote about Hendershot in his draft profile. “Hendershot has played between 240 and 265 pounds, so finding the proper weight for his usage could be critical. He plays with a competitive demeanor as both a receiver and blocker. He will likely be viewed as an “F” tight end with a greater focus on his pass-catching and run-after-catch talent. While he has enough talent to compete for a roster spot, his 2020 arrest will need to be vetted by teams evaluating him for the draft.”

Hendershot now joins the Chiefs and will learn from Travis Kelce. In 2023, Kelce caught 93 passes for 984 yards and five touchdowns in 15 regular season starts. He also helped the Chiefs win their third Super Bowl in five seasons.
One of the reasons the Cowboys traded Hendershot was the emergence of Jake Ferguson. Dallas drafted Ferguson in the fourth round of the 2022 draft and had a strong 2023 season, catching 71 passes for 761 yards and five touchdowns. Backing up Ferguson is Luke Schoonmaker who was drafted by the Cowboys in the second round last year.
