Aaiden Diggs, the young son of Dallas Cowboys cornerback Trevon Diggs, became a star this summer during the airing of HBO’s “Hard Knocks.” The fun-loving child made a return to the headlines Monday night when he asked his dad for a favor.

“He was like, ‘I want you to get an interception and a touchdown,'” Trevon Diggs said during his postgame press conference. “I kept my promise.”

In coverage of his former Alabama teammate DeVonta Smith, Dallas Cowboys cornerback Trevon Diggs picked off another former Alabama teammate in Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts and returned it for a touchdown to extend Dallas’ lead over Philadelphia 27-7.

As the Eagles rookie Smith fell down on an out route, Diggs jumped in front of the pass thrown by Hurts and raced nearly 55 yards down the sideline untouched for a Dallas Cowboys touchdown.

“I had read Jalen’s three-step (drop), his quick-game read, and the receiver had a short split, so I was expecting him to run an out,” said Diggs. “I was seeing them every day and at Alabama we’d go ones-on-ones and we’re competing every day.”

He continued: “DeVonta knew what I wanted to do, and I knew what he wanted to do. So it’s fair game. It was fun.”

The pick-six was Diggs’ third interception of the season. Diggs is tied for the NFL lead in interceptions and is the only player in the league with an interception in every game this season.

Diggs has now recorded six interceptions in 15 NFL games played. The Alabama product has emerged as the top cornerback for the Cowboys in just his second year in the league.

Comments from the coaching staff

While fulfilling his promise to his son, Trevon Diggs has earned the trust of his defensive coordinator and head coach for his performance through the first three weeks of the season.

“Cowboys DC Dan Quinn said CB Trevon Diggs ‘certainly is ready for that challenge’ to shadow a team’s top WR,’” Michael Gehlken of the Dallas Morning News said. “Believes Diggs has responded when done it so far this season. ‘You feel his intent. You feel his length and strength at the line of scrimmage’ and ball skills.’”

Before the Week Three meeting with the Eagles, head coach Mike McCarthy also chimed in on the impressive start.

“He’s had two tremendous matchups two weeks in a row and he’s answered the bell,” McCarthy said. “The only negative in his game has been the combative penalties and if you don’t have combative penalties as a football team maybe we’re not playing hard enough. Other than that I think he’s played at a very high level.”
