Dallas Cowboys rising defensive star Trevon Diggs recorded his 10th interception of the season on Sunday, achieving one of his personal goals. Diggs started the season on a record pace, with many fans wondering if he would be able to reach the NFL record of 14 in a single season.

Trevon Diggs on interception goals

After grabbing his 10th interception against the New York Giants on Sunday, Diggs said after the game that it was a personal season goal to reach that number. With three games left to play, Diggs isn’t looking to quit with what he’s got so far.

“I gotta set new goals now,” said Diggs after the game.

While he has fallen from the pace he was on to begin the year, the NFL record is still within striking distance for Diggs. He already has one game this season where he recorded two interceptions, and would need another if he was to threaten the record set by Night Train Lane. Lane’s record of 14 interceptions was set in his rookie season with the Los Angeles Rams.

Another potential goal is the Dallas Cowboys’ single-season interception record. Everson Walls recorded 11 interceptions in the 1981 season, a record that hasn’t been threatened since Walls himself recorded nine interceptions in 1985. With three games left to go in the season, Diggs would need two more to set the new team record.

Young defensive stars

The emergence of Diggs as a big-play defender has helped elevate the Cowboys’ secondary, but another key young star in Dallas is shining just as brightly. Rookie linebacker Micah Parsons has had a season that put him in the Defensive Player of the Year conversation in his first year.

With Diggs grabbing ten interceptions on the year, Dallas has become the first defense since 2007 to have a pair of players record at least 10 sacks and at least 10 interceptions in a season. Parsons has 12 sacks so far this season, while Diggs reached double digits himself on Sunday.

The duo has helped make Dallas one of the most dangerous defenses in the NFL as the playoff picture begins to unfold. As the Cowboys’ offense struggles, defense keeps them winning games. The Cowboys now have a 10-4 record on the season, battling for the top seed in the NFC.

With the Arizona Cardinals’ shocking loss to the Detroit Lions, the Cowboys have reached them in the standings. The Green Bay Packers and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers both hold a slight lead in the standings as of Sunday afternoon. If the standings were to hold, Dallas would enter the playoffs as the No. 3 seed.
